PC [BUG] 1.5.1 borked my game - resolution is messed up, and trying to change it kills the sound

I already put 15 hours into the 1.5 update - what can I say, I'm a big fan - but as of today my game is totally unplayable. I'm assuming it must have been the switchover to the 1.5.1 update.

More times than not the game crashes on startup. When I delete the player_preferences, it will reliably startup, but with super-high resolution. When I go into my options, it is set to "borderless windowed," with the resolution set at 4096 x 2160, and the resolution is greyed out. When I click on "borderless windowed," my only options are that and "windowed." No full screen. From there, if I click windowed, the game will shrink to a tiny window, but will still have sound. However, the window options change now - "borderless windowed," is gone, and "full screen" has appeared.

If I click full screen, more times than not, the game will crash again. If it doesn't crash, the sound will die. 100% of the time. I can change the resolutions, but the sound doesn't come back.

From here, if I restart the game, when it starts back up, it will usually be in full screen with the resolution that I left it at, but no sound. It is so weird, I actually hear the sound start when I start the game as it boots up but before the window actually appears. Like I hear the hissing that plays right before the mouse click and the notes of the opening song, but then the window flashes before it appears (initializing the resolution maybe?) and the sound is gone.

I tried running a music app in the background just leaving a song playing to see what happens. Normally my computer would play both at once. Instead, when the sound goes on Stardew Valley, it kills the sound everywhere else too. I have to restart the music app to be able to get it to be able to play anything again.

Windows 10. Computer is connected by HDMI to a tv, with a native resolution of 3840 x 2160. No mods. Playing the game on Steam. Running an RX 5700 with a Ryzen 5 3600.

I should add that I've restarted the game, restarted steam, restarted my computer, uninstalled and reinstalled the game, ran both steam and SDV as administrator, verified that no compatibility modes are running, tried several compatibility modes anyway even though the guide on Steam says not to (particularly Win10's high dpi settings), verified that my drivers are up to date and that my sound settings are correct and that SDV is playing sound out of the proper speakers and that other things can play sound and that it works, all of that jazz.

As of right now, the game is basically unplayable. Sad face.

Hey, i have the same problem I even have a post talking about it, unfortunately no answer and no fix and it is a post from a few days ago only a replay from someone else that has the same problem, I have found a "solution"(it is not, is only a go around the problem type of solution so I am hoping for a fix/pacht soon) and it is to put the game on full screen mode and adjust the resolution that is proper for your TV then close the game with the game on windows borderless mode after that open the game again and it should have the resolution that you put on full screen mode just play on windows borderless mode because if yo changes the game back to full screen mode the sound would not play because for some reason the game on full screen mode won't transmit sound on other devices (e.g. TV in my case and yours) and I have this problem since 1.5 so i don't think it is a 1.5.1 bug is even older. :krobus:

This is the "solution" that worked for me hope that it does for you to.:frown:

Here's my post where I talk about the sound problem and a another problem that is involved with it and I do a better explanation for the "Solutions" (that it is not really it just a go around it like I explained in the reply from above, it is just so you can play the game with sound and the proper resolution you need).:check:
Hope a fix/pacht comes soon because it is not fun to open and close the game more than one time just so you can put a proper resolution because full screen mode doesn't work properly it dosen't play sounds on other devices, only windows mode and windows borderless mode works halfway at least it plays sound but doesn't allow to adjust the resolution and they are the only ones that the sound work on other devices (e.g.TV) so you need to basically switch from the different mode so you can have both sound and the proper resolution for your TV or other device. You only need to do this once but if you change the TV or other device that haves another resolution then you need to do it again all of the opening, adjusting, closing and opening again.:hmph:

The game just needs a fix/pacht for the full screen mode so it can play sounds on other devices or/and make the other two mode be available to have the option to adjust the resolution that's it.

That worked!

It had been working for a really long time, and so the 1.5.1 update was the only thing I could think of that changed between when it was last working and now. Oh well. It's a pain in the butt to have to reset my resolution every time, but at least I can play again.

Yeah, hopefully ConcernedApe has an idea of why it is happening and can figure out a fix.

Good that my method that "fix" this problem works for you.:thumbsup:

I think the problem is all on full screen mode for the reason that doesn't transmit sound on to other devices he needs to check that first because since I bought it on pc I had that problem when I put it in full screen mode on that mode it only transmit sound on to the pc and not to my TV though the HDMI cable, and so because of that you need to play on the other two mode so you can have sound on the TV or other devices. But I had one problem with those two and it its that they didn't have the option to adjust the resolution so I went to figure out a solution by me self play with the three mode until I come up with the "solution" because there's nothing on the internet that helps with this problem.:hmph:
