Grass only turns into hay if you have a silo. Wheat has a by-product that is hay. I have never had to buy hay and always sell my mayonnaise. One of the first things I try to get built for income is a preserves jar. Then the keg. I tend to process everything. But, in very early game I just keep fishing. It helps to fix the bridge at the beach so you can pick up coral and other items that are good money early game.

Preserve jars are better for low-value crops/fruits, like parsnips, salmonberries, hot pepper and blueberries. In theory the breaking point to when the keg is more profitable for fruit is quite low (blueberries/apricots), while it's a bit higher for vegetables. However, since the preserve jars often work faster than the kegs, I tend to use the preserve jars for most produce other than high value fruits, coffee beans, hops, and wheat.

You mainly craft them. The recipe for that is learned from Farming a lot earlier than the recipe for kegs, so if you don't have it already, you probably will have it soon. It does require a fair amount of resources. 50 wood, 40 stone, and 8 coal.

One word my dude....... Wine it will do six figures in a week. Start planting trees and make a small tree farm. I have 9 trees you can have more. Resin is sacred early game when your tapping only one or two trees but trust me soon enough you will be having more kegs than you have crops to process. Unlock the bus and the greenhouse immediately to start a Starfruit empire. Turn your Starfruit into wine with kegs even if it's only 4-7 bottles a week that's still a start. Build a shed to store kegs. Fish to make money and if your really desperate try mining for gold and selling gold bars. I used to do that to make money for small things. Also start saving up for a barn and buy cows. Cows will make money and you can automate them with auto grabbers. Joja Is better because of auto petters too. Pigs are amazing because yeah they will make enough money for a month's hay in a day. You will need to dedicate TONS of space for them tho. Half my farm is dedicated to my 2 barn 24 pigs setup. Choose your professions wisely. Unlock the sewers because yeah there is some pretty important stuff there.
