They don't end up in your inventory afterwards, but you do fish them. I ended up fishing 4 in the competition, and not enough fish bit to be able to win (only 4 vs the 5 Willy gets). Not sure if that last thing is relevant, but maybe Qi beans being in the item pool could be affecting the number...
