If Slimes hit you hard in skull cavern and volcano, go in the firsts 20 levels of mines, kill A TON of them (1000) and equip the nicest of all rings: the slime charmer Ring! Now you can laught in front of a mob of purple slimes while you kill them for iridium (or ignore them and focus on that flying snakes).
I usually do some runs in the skull cavern with slime charmer ring + burglar ring (double drop from monsters) to earn enought iridium.
At the top of the Vulcan, you can merge 2 rings in one, so I recomend burglar+slime charmer and iridium band (you can craft it) + lucky ring or whatever you like
You can MERGE rings!??? Oh man, I am looking forward to that!!! I always feel torn between my two combat rings and my double glowstone rings.

And sooooo badly do I want the slime charmer ring! Originally for my slime hutch, but it would be so useful in the mines when the slimes swarm you. Currently I’ve only slain a little over 500. 500 more slimes to go!

My go-to setup before I get any *later game spoilery things* is the best sword already mentioned, space boots, iridium band & slime charmer ring (unless you want to kill them for drops you can just completely ignore the slimes with it) or burglar's ring.

Food: coffee/triple shot espresso for +1 speed, and either spicy eel (+1 speed and +1 luck) or crab cakes (+1 speed and +1 defence) for buffs, plus a big stack of easier-to-acquire non-buff food to keep health up. Early on I'll put down a bunch of crab pots and make sashimi, later on when there's a bit of money coming in I'll buy pizza from Gus. Whatever food you go for, eat often.

(Anyone else get so used to +2 speed anything less feels way too slow?)
I’ve started mass production coffee because now that I’ve had a taste for extra speed I can’t tolerate the default speed anymore 😂

Great job for getting to floor 36, @Miss Berry! You'll only get better from here!

I'd also like to let you know that you can reply to multiple people in one post. By doing this, you can clump all of your responses in a group, so that it takes up less space and prevents the thread from getting cluttered! :)

Aaaah, thank you! That makes things so much easier. I simply @ the person/s to reply to, such as @Hill Myna?

You can do it whichever way you prefer. Sometimes quoting the post is good for a direct answer to a quoted question, especially if the Q isn't in the most recent post. @-ing them is nice for a more general response but especially when you want to call someone into a thread. I think BlaDe, imnvs, FilthyGorilla and Mystic Tempest get @-ed a lot because they have a lot of useful information to questions people have but they might miss the thread without the @.

I think in most cases it is better to do it like I have in this post. :)

Lew has nailed it!

Thank you! I’ve been stocking up on coffee but I didn’t think about buffs from meals like spicy eels.

I am currently level 9 combat and I chose the Scout profession but I think I’m going to change that after all the advice.

And the cheese will come in handy! I love my goats and cows and I have a cellar, so getting iridium cheese should be a breeze. Before I was only selling them
I wouldn't bother aging it, if you eat it early enough gold cheese gives you more than enough energy.

Don't use glowstone, use the Iridium Band: glow, magnet PLUS 10% more attack!

Hmm, looks like I'm a bit late to the party. Ahh well, such is life. Still, a few extra things to consider:

Triple Shot Espresso is basically three shots of coffee at once, increasing duration not effect. Given you can craft them up as much as you like, it's just a way to have to worry about drinking coffee less often.

And while they're a little inconvenient to make, Crab Cakes are really good stat food as well. They give a +1 to Speed and a +1 to Defense so you take a bit less damage from every hit, and they last over twice as long as Spicy Eel, making them pretty much a one-shot all day food.

As an alternative, check out Pepper Poppers. You just need to grow some Hot Peppers and combine them with the Cheese you're already producing in substantial quantities. The thing here is that it gives a speed buff, and actually provides more health than cheese does (although less than gold-star cheese), meaning you can just use this as your food to restore health with which also passively refreshes your speed buff.

Just remember that you can only make use of one food based buff and one drink based buff, so if you are using (as an example) pepper poppers to give you a speed boost, you won't get the speed bonus from the Spicy Eel.

Also, you might try the Galaxy Hammer, which should now be found in the Adventurer's Guild shop now that you've obtained a Galaxy Sword. It has higher base damage than the sword, and the right click function is also quite handy.

As far as Rings, when you hit Combat 9, you unlock one of the most useful rings out there, the Iridium Band. It's basically a Glow Ring, a Magnet Ring, and a Ruby Ring all rolled into one!

From there, the Crabshell Ring gives a significant +5 Defense bonus, which can dramatically reduce the amount of damage you are taking over the course of an adventure.

If you don't like nasty debuffs, consider an Immunity Band, which gives +4 Immunity (each point of immunity is a 10% chance you won't be affected by a debuff). With the Cinderclown Shoes, this gives you a 90% chance to just not be affected by any given debuff, and with the Mermaid Shoes, it goes over 100% at the cost of one Defense vs the Cinderclown Shoes. YMMV.

If you can find one, a Soul Sapper ring restores Energy per monster kill, giving you a lot of sustainability. Then again, you're probably more worried about health than energy depleting, so it might be less useful to you.

Finally, Explosive Ammo might be useful to you if you plan on making use of your slingshot. Does much more damage than rocks do, and the blast radius will blow up rocks and downed undead in its area of effect when it goes off just like normal bombs do.

For both SC and the Volcanic Mines, the goal is only completion. I wanna know what’s at the end, what awards await, what stories to unfold, all that jazz!
I'm not sure if someone already mentioned this, but while the volcano does have an end and a benefit to completing it, the Skull Cavern does not (at least not in the same way). There are quests related to the Skull Cavern, that require you to reach floor 25, and floor 100, but it's only worth working towards those goals while the quests are active. Otherwise, the Skull Cavern is mostly just for collecting resources.

I always try to attack while facing upwards. It just seems to work better as opposed to facing left, right or down. I will run around and try to get under anything in order to attack while facing up. I think it may be due to the perspective angle of the game, but I'm not sure!

Yeah because of the perspective of the game and the origin of the weapon swing it makes the different directions of swinging have different ranges, facing down having a severely limited weapon hitbox in comparison to other directions.

Because of this tools and weapons also swung at different speed depending on direction, that’s why it’s always better to swing from bottom or sides instead of downwards.

I usually bring gold cheese, but as someone said it really gives you too much health (except in emergencies!) I like to eat as soon as my health bar hits 1/2 or even 2/3. I find gold hops (81 hp) are perfect for keeping health topped up. You can amass a huge amount of them easily by having 7-9 hops plants in the greenhouse with quality fertilizer. Probably less than that would do. You can also grow cactus plants in your greenhouse if you prefer, but you get hops daily and cactus fruit only every few days. I don't really think it's necessary to use iridium quality cheese, but whatever makes you feel safe is the best! Don't bring too many different healing foods though, they take up valuable inventory slots.

Also spicy eels give the luck boost which is very helpful if you can deal with the enemies (meaning you don't need the defence boost from crab cakes)

Them and Iridium Quality Salmonberries are my go-to foods for health recovery. You may be stuffing your face longer, but I'm a cheapskate and also like selling my iridium goat cheese every Sunday.
I just buy more cows so that I am drowning in cheese anyway! They are cheap to feed and are cuter than the pigs. I am not good with the button-pressing, so fewer steps means fewer chances for a problem (getting attacked in between bites, for instance).
