So, guys, I was cursed in another thread to tell you the story of Rumpelstiltskin (fun fact: I didn't know how he was named in english and was pretty surprised to find this being more or less a phonetic version of his name, not a translation 🤓) And since I'm one of the dinosaurs here, gather around the campfire and listen to old Synapside, but please, don't make too much noise while chewing your marshmellows 😉

The Story of Rumpelstiltskin (based on the german fairy tale written down by the Brothers Grimm)

Once upon a time in a far away Kingdom there lived a miller with his daughter, leading a pretty normal life with milling and doing whatever else a miller has to do to get along.

But the Miller was also kind of a braggart and when one day the King and his Huntsmen came along and asked for some refreshment, he told them about his daughter while catering them, how talented she was and, most of all, she could spin straw into gold. The King, being not only handsome, but also a bit greedy, said to the Miller:

"Well, if she can do so, I'll make her my Queen, but she has to prove it."

And so the Millers daughter had to follow the King to his castle. She was very frightened, because she knew that she could do a lot, but not what was asked of her right now.

Arriving at the Kings residence she was given a spinning wheel and locked in a chamber filled with straw to spin it all into gold until the next morning. Sitting there all alone she became very desperate and started crying, because she knew she would be killed next morning, when she wouldn't fullfill the Quest given to her. Suddenly an ugly sly little gnome appeared from out of nowhere and asked her, why she was crying so hard. The girl told him about her impossible quest and the gnome nodded and asked, what she would give him, if he helped her. She offered him her ring, but wasn't convinced at all. But the gnome accepted the gift, smiled at her and she suddenly felt asleep. When she woke up in the morning, all the straw had turned into gold and the King was very pleased, when he unlocked the chamber to check on her.

The next evening she was brought to a much bigger room, all filled up with a huge mass of straw. While sitting there again, crying her heart out, the gnome appeared and offered his help again. This time she offered him her bracelet and he accepted. And when she woke up in the morning, all of the straw had turned into gold again. The King was even more pleased and started to fell for her, but the greedyness took him over again and he had his ballroom filled with straw all the way to the ceiling. And told her, he would marry her when she fullfilled this last task. The Millers daughter became even more frightened then before, being not sure if the gnome would show up once again and what to offer him... So when he finally appeared, she told him, she'd nothing more to give him for his help. So he asked for her Firstborn, when she would be Queen and being so desperated about how this all would end she agreed.

But everything turned out well, she felt asleep and in the morning the gnome was gone and the ball room filled with gold. The King was very happy and took her for his Queen, saying that he's the richest man in the world with such a talented wife. She had a good life before her and after a while forgot about the gnome and her promise.

Time went by and when she gave birth to her first child, they both were very happy about having an heir. A few days later, when the Queen was putting her child to bed, the gnome suddenly appeared out of nowhere. She was very startled when he reminded her of the promise she once had given him and started begging him so hard that he took pity on her and offered her another deal. If she could guess his name within three days, she could keep her child.
Later that evening the King came to check on his little family and found her crying desperately besides the craddle of their child. He asked what happened and she finally told him the truth. And well, the fear of losing his child overtook everything else and they started to make a plan.

The next day they asked around the castle and wrote down all the names they could think of. So when the Gnome came around at night, the Queen told them all to him, but he rejected them completly.
The day after, herolds were sent out to the towns and villages all around the Kingdom to ask for seldom and strange names instead, but the gnome rejected even them, too, reminding her that there was only one day left now.

The third day some late herolds showed up, but they didn't have anything new to tell, so the King and his wife became very sad and desperate again. But early evening a very breathless, harried last herold came back and told them the following:
"Your majesties, I'm sorry for being so late, but something weird happened to me on my way back. Deep in the woods I got lost in the wilderness and saw a light shine through the trees and undergrowth. As I got closer, I saw an ugly little man dancing around a fire, shouting, -Today I’ll bake, tomorrow I’ll brew, the day after tomorrow I’ll take the queen’s child! Oh, how good it is that no one knows my name is Rumpelstiltskin.- Somehow I found a way out of the Woods and hurried to let you know about that."

When the royal couple heard this, they were very relieved, because they knew who the little man was. They rewarded the messenger generously, and when the Gnome appeared this night, the Queen asked him:

"Is your name Hinz?"
The gnome shook his head, smirking.

"Is your name Kunz?"
"No, your majesty." And the Gnome smirked even brighter.

"Maybe it is Rumpelstiltskin?"

Hearing that word the gnome suddenly flew into a rage, began to scream and rant, “The devil told you that, the devil told you that!” and with a loud bang the ground opened up beneath him, and he vanished, never to be seen again.

The king and his miller’s daughter Queen lived happily ever after, and the spun gold probably lasted until the end of their days.

Thank you for listening 🙏🏻 I hope you enjoyed it. 😊

Yes I did enjoy that! I remember once when I was really young I couldn't sleep, so I went to find something to read and landed on a collection on Brothers Grimm stories. After one I still couldn't sleep because it was too scary and thought "yeah, never reading them again".
Not true, past me.
Some of the stuff they've collected is very much enjoyable, especially when told by our favourite forum synapsid :crab:

I enjoy fairy tales since my childhood and have a good collection of them from all around the world by now...
The interesting facts about the Brothers Grimm Stories mostly come out of the studies about them, knowing the original stories before they overworked them and all the psychological background... 🤓

Well, I'm not cursed anymore, and feel like in the right mood right now, so I thought it might be nice to share another fairy tale with you... It's one of my favourite Grimm's Stories and its called "The Forest House". It even has some SDV vibes in a way… So, if you're interested, the fire is turned on, the marshmellows picked on their poles, gather around and listen:

The Forest House

Once upon a time there was a poor lumberjack living with his family at the reachs of a big deep forest. One day he said to his wife: "I have to go deep into the woods today to chop some big trees, make sure, our eldest daughter brings me my lunch, because I won't be home before the night comes. I will scatter millet on my way so that she finds me." Said and done, he went off and later that day his eldest daughter followed with a meal. But she couldn't find him, 'cause the birds had found and picked all the millet. So she went deeper and deeper into the forest and was completely lost, until she saw a light shining through the trees. She hoped it to be a house where people lived and she probably could stay for the night and went over, finding herself in front of an old wooden house, that already looked pretty run-down. She knocked at the door and was invited in. Inside she found an old looking man with a really long grey beard, sitting at a table, and some animals sitting and lying near the fireplace, a chicken, a rooster and a colorful checkered cow.

The girl told her story and asked, if she could stay the night and maybe have something to eat. The man looked up and asked the animals:

"Beautiful chicken, beautiful rooster, and you, beautiful colorful cow, what do you say about that?" (it rhymes in German) And the animals only replied: "Dooks".*

So the old man asked the girl to cook dinner for them. She went over to the fireplace and fixed a soup, put it on the table and they both started eating. After that, she asked where she could go to rest for the night and the old man asked his animals again:

"Beautiful chicken, beautiful rooster, and you, beautiful colorful cow, what do you say about that?"

And this time the animals replied: 'You ate with him. You drank with him. You didn’t think of us at all, now see where you end up at night!'

The girl was a bit confused about that, but the old man showed her up the stairs to a small room with two beds. He asked her to make the beds for the night and went back downstairs. The girl did as she was told and then went to bed without waiting for the old man. He came back a little later, shook his head as he watched her, and with a wave of his hand, a trapdoor opened, and the bed along with the sleeping girl disappeared into the cellar.

The Lumberjack had went home after dark very hungry and was really upset, that he hadn't got anything to eat that day. He told his wife, that he didn't get all his things done due to the lack of a proper lunch, and that she should send the middle daughter with his meal the next day. He would scatter lentils along the way for her to find him. Said and done, but by the time the girl set off with her father's lunch, the birds already had picked all the lentils, so this girl also got totally lost. After dark she saw a light through the trees and found the wooden house. The girl knocked at the door, the old man invited her in, she saw the animals around the fireplace and begged him for a bed and something to eat. And the old man asked his animals.

"Beautiful chicken, beautiful rooster, and you, beautiful colorful cow, what do you say about that?" And the animals only replied: "Dooks".*

So the man asked her to cook dinner for them, she did so, and they both started eating. Later she asked where she could sleep tonight and the old man asked his animals again:

"Beautiful chicken, beautiful rooster, and you, beautiful colorful cow, what do you say about that?"

And the animals replied: 'You ate with him. You drank with him. You didn’t think of us at all, now see where you end up at night!'

So the old man showed her up the stairs to the small room with two beds, asked her to make the them up for the night and went back downstairs. The girl did as she was told and laid herself to sleep, not waiting for the old man. He came back a little later, shook his head again, as he watched her, and with a wave of his hand, a trapdoor opened, and the bed along with the sleeping girl also disappeared into the cellar.

The Lumberjack came home this night and was pretty angry for having another day without a proper lunch. He told his wife, that the next day the youngest daughter should bring his meal. Being very obedient, she wouldn't probably messing around like her sisters, he said. And that he would scatter peas along the way this time, so she surely would find him. His wife didn't agreed to that, became very sad and afraid of losing her last child, too. But said and done, and by the time the girl set off with the meal, the birds again had picked all the peas, so the girl had to face the same faith as her sisters.

As night fell, she had completely gotten lost, too, and felt relieved when she saw a light among the trees. She also found the house, knocked, and was invited inside. The old man was sitting at the table again with his animals near the fireplace. She asked for food and a place to sleep, and the old man questioned his animals again:

"Beautiful chicken, beautiful rooster, and you, beautiful colorful cow, what do you say about that?" And the animals only replied: "Dooks".*

So the old man also asked her to prepare a meal for the two of them, and she cooked. But before she sat down to eat, she looked at the animals and said to the old man, "How can I eat if the animals aren't taken care of?" Then she went outside, got hay and grain, filled a bucket with fresh water, fed the animals, and petted them. Then she sat down at the table and ate what the old man had left for her. Afterwards she asked, where she could rest for the night and the old man asked his animals again:

"Beautiful chicken, beautiful rooster, and you, beautiful colorful cow, what do you say about that?" And the animals replied:

"You ate with us, you drank with us, you thought of us all carefully, we wish you a good night."

So the old man showed her up to the room with the two beds. He also asked her to make up the beds for the night, which she did. The old man came back and layed down in one bed, she took the other, said her prayers and felt asleep.

But during the night, it got so noisy in the house that the girl woke up. It started rustling and rattling in the corners, the door flew open and slammed against the wall; the beams roared as if they were being torn from their places, and it sounded like the stairs were falling down, and finally there was a crash as if the whole roof was collapsing. But then it went quiet again and nothing happened to the girl, she stayed lying there calmly and felt asleep again. When she woke up in the morning in bright sunlight, she was in a large hall, and everything around her shone in royal splendor: golden flowers grew on the walls against a green silk background, the bed was made of ivory and the canopy above it of red velvet.

The girl thought it was a dream, but then three richly dressed servants entered and asked what orders she had. "Go ahead," the girl replied, "I’ll get up soon and cook some soup for the old man and then also beautiful chicken, beautiful rooster, and feed the beautiful colorful cow." She thought the old man was already up and looked around his bed, but he wasn’t there—there was a stranger instead. And when she looked at him and saw that he was young and handsome, he woke up, and said: "I am a king’s son and was cursed by an evil witch to live as an old, gray man in the forest; no one was allowed near me except my three servants in the form of a chicken, a little rooster, and a colorful cow. And the curse could not end until a girl came to us who was so good at heart that she was kind not only to humans but also to animals. And that was you, and tonight we were redeemed through you, and the old forest house has been transformed back into my royal palace." And when they got up, the prince told the three servants to go fetch the girl's father and mother for the wedding. "But where are my two sisters?" asked the girl. "I locked them in the cellar, and tomorrow they will be taken into the forest to serve the charcoal burner as maids until they improve and no longer let even the poor animals starve."

And then they all lived happily ever after.

Sorry, got interrupted while posting this... Hope the fire's not burnt down already 😏

*Dooks is no real word, I just tried a probably phonetic spelling of what the animals say in german...

Maybe when a royal couple "rewards you generously" you don't need to worry about money at all after?
Hope the fire's not burnt down already 😏
Nope, but while you were gone, someone dumped a whole lot of blue vitriol in there and now it sparks green.

Regargless of the fire colour it was a great story. Love to see you telling us more even though it's not in the curse - is this a new tradition?

That's great, I would love it... Heard about driftwood doing so when burning, so we can move the fire to the beach and feed it some driftwood 🥰

Idk, should we make it one to be? Maybe someone else would like to tell a story, too... 🤷🏻‍♀️ So feel free to do so.

I didn't know, but would be cool to see! Let's do that next time.

I don't think I've got any good stories, but if anything I'll know where to go with them.

Sounds good. As long as I can have some soap as well.
Whatever you like, bring it along. Just make sure it doesn't affect the fire too much when you eventually toss it in... I'm fine with stickbread and maybe some sausages 😏

If you burn driftwood from the ocean, the flames can sometimes look bluish or lavender-colored because of the substances absorbed from the saltwater and their reaction with the tree resin... But it’s not recommended, since the smoke from the fire contains more pollutants than normal campfire smoke for the reasons mentioned. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ohhh that’s really interesting. That could potentially be an upside to being stuck on a deserted island then…

Why would we throw perfectly good food into the fire?

Is this a plan or just a thought for now?
