The Story of Rumpelstiltskin (
based on the german fairy tale written down by the Brothers Grimm)
Once upon a time in a far away Kingdom there lived a miller with his daughter, leading a pretty normal life with milling and doing whatever else a miller has to do to get along.
But the Miller was also kind of a braggart and when one day the King and his Huntsmen came along and asked for some refreshment, he told them about his daughter while catering them, how talented she was and, most of all, she could spin straw into gold. The King, being not only handsome, but also a bit greedy, said to the Miller:
"Well, if she can do so, I'll make her my Queen, but she has to prove it."
And so the Millers daughter had to follow the King to his castle. She was very frightened, because she knew that she could do a lot, but not what was asked of her right now.
Arriving at the Kings residence she was given a spinning wheel and locked in a chamber filled with straw to spin it all into gold until the next morning. Sitting there all alone she became very desperate and started crying, because she knew she would be killed next morning, when she wouldn't fullfill the Quest given to her. Suddenly an ugly sly little gnome appeared from out of nowhere and asked her, why she was crying so hard. The girl told him about her impossible quest and the gnome nodded and asked, what she would give him, if he helped her. She offered him her ring, but wasn't convinced at all. But the gnome accepted the gift, smiled at her and she suddenly felt asleep. When she woke up in the morning, all the straw had turned into gold and the King was very pleased, when he unlocked the chamber to check on her.
The next evening she was brought to a much bigger room, all filled up with a huge mass of straw. While sitting there again, crying her heart out, the gnome appeared and offered his help again. This time she offered him her bracelet and he accepted. And when she woke up in the morning, all of the straw had turned into gold again. The King was even more pleased and started to fell for her, but the greedyness took him over again and he had his ballroom filled with straw all the way to the ceiling. And told her, he would marry her when she fullfilled this last task. The Millers daughter became even more frightened then before, being not sure if the gnome would show up once again and what to offer him... So when he finally appeared, she told him, she'd nothing more to give him for his help. So he asked for her Firstborn, when she would be Queen and being so desperated about how this all would end she agreed.
But everything turned out well, she felt asleep and in the morning the gnome was gone and the ball room filled with gold. The King was very happy and took her for his Queen, saying that he's the richest man in the world with such a talented wife. She had a good life before her and after a while forgot about the gnome and her promise.
Time went by and when she gave birth to her first child, they both were very happy about having an heir. A few days later, when the Queen was putting her child to bed, the gnome suddenly appeared out of nowhere. She was very startled when he reminded her of the promise she once had given him and started begging him so hard that he took pity on her and offered her another deal. If she could guess his name within three days, she could keep her child.
Later that evening the King came to check on his little family and found her crying desperately besides the craddle of their child. He asked what happened and she finally told him the truth. And well, the fear of losing his child overtook everything else and they started to make a plan.
The next day they asked around the castle and wrote down all the names they could think of. So when the Gnome came around at night, the Queen told them all to him, but he rejected them completly.
The day after, herolds were sent out to the towns and villages all around the Kingdom to ask for seldom and strange names instead, but the gnome rejected even them, too, reminding her that there was only one day left now.
The third day some late herolds showed up, but they didn't have anything new to tell, so the King and his wife became very sad and desperate again. But early evening a very breathless, harried last herold came back and told them the following:
"Your majesties, I'm sorry for being so late, but something weird happened to me on my way back. Deep in the woods I got lost in the wilderness and saw a light shine through the trees and undergrowth. As I got closer, I saw an ugly little man dancing around a fire, shouting, -Today Iāll bake, tomorrow Iāll brew, the day after tomorrow Iāll take the queenās child! Oh, how good it is that no one knows my name is Rumpelstiltskin.- Somehow I found a way out of the Woods and hurried to let you know about that."
When the royal couple heard this, they were very relieved, because they knew who the little man was. They rewarded the messenger generously, and when the Gnome appeared this night, the Queen asked him:
"Is your name Hinz?"
The gnome shook his head, smirking.
"Is your name Kunz?"
"No, your majesty." And the Gnome smirked even brighter.
"Maybe it is Rumpelstiltskin?"
Hearing that word the gnome suddenly flew into a rage, began to scream and rant, āThe devil told you that, the devil told you that!ā and with a loud bang the ground opened up beneath him, and he vanished, never to be seen again.
The king and his millerās daughter Queen lived happily ever after, and the spun gold probably lasted until the end of their days.
