What is your dream job?

Honestly? Computer Programmer.

I wanted to program until I took assembly/machine language. After that class, I no longer wanted to write programs.

(Also, I have a weird habit of making computers lock up/glitch/otherwise behave strangely - including Macs and UNIX that supposedly shouldn't do that. I didn't believe in fate, but it was really hard to keep going in the face of every single computer flipping me off.)

I was going to ask what everyone wanted to be when they got out of school, but then I realized that not everyone is a 14 year old girl like me. So, if you could be anything in the world, what would you be? That’s more inclusive, right?

Personally, I’d have to say a CFO. They get paid incredibly well, and I love working with data. Anything in finance, really. It’s always interested me.

I have quite a few ideas in mind of jobs that I think are nice, though my current job as a train driver is really pleasant without the ****ty management.

- Professional horse rider (for races and such)
- Farrier
- Veterinarian
- General Doctor (Or is it practitionner ? English isn't my first language)
- Ambulance driver
- Farmer (But at some sort of smaller scale, less crops and animals to tend to)
- Woodworker
- Architect (So I can finally wipe brutalism out of current taste and bring back victorian architecture)

And probably some other jobs that are not coming up in my head right now.

When I was a kid, my dream job was first to be a teacher, then an archaeologist or a conservator. Or a paid reader... None of that worked out, Most of it got hobby somehow, but once I’m retired, nothing will stand in the way of me becoming a librarian.

I worked in a library for 2 years and volunteered before that. It was cool and I got to work with some of the old collection of books from the 1800s as they needed to be cataloged into the NEW Computer System. Lol many years ago.
I started college as an Astro major before being convinced not to continue (not sure that was the right choice but the math was considerable and was also my weakness) and worked in a lab for a bit before switching to working in a dendrochronology lab (tree ring science!). The astro was pretty fun but nothing will ever beat spending 6 weeks camping with a dozen other scientists in Sequoia National Park coring thousands of trees to do climate change science.
I picked up astronomy again as a hobby later on and have a few telescopes I view the night sky with. I even took one to Hawaii on a vacation but the whole astro part of the trip was rained out by a hurricane. LOL bad luck!

The story is all about how you tell it and that's compressing quite a bit of time. For the old books, it was something I'd noticed in a long-term storage area and asked what the plan for it was. They said, there's a plan but if you can find the time the plan can be yours. I found the time because it seemed.... relevant. Important? I dunno, hard to describe it.

I could also tell you how utterly terrible 7 years of grad school was so there are ups 'n downs. But there's no way to oversell the working trip to Sequoia, that was simply the best time of my life and I was lucky to get the opportunity. Doing actual field work in a science is a ridiculously rewarding experience and I encourage anyone and everyone to take the chance to do it if at all possible, even if just volunteering. I had a few options for that summer and I specifically chose the field work.

I do not frequently make the right choice. Most often I don't.

But damn did I get it right that time.
