random question but are the villagers bi or maybe unlabeled? I’m just asking because they will marry the farmer no matter what gender they are
The bachelors and bachelorettes can be read as gay, straight, or bi depending on your farmers, but without mods, absolutely nobody you don't date is anything but straight. All the existing couples: straight. Background comments for Willy and Gus: imply straight. Marlon: comments on Marnie at the flower dance, which almost feels like it's just there as a way to defend against assumptions Gil is his partner as well as fellow adventurer. All the dialogue: assumes straight as a default.
As LGBT rep goes, it's nice that there's almost no homophobia if the farmer is the same gender as their bachelor/ette choice - George makes one comment he later recants, and a couple of the bachelor/ettes deal with a bit of internalized stuff where they themselves assumed they were straight - but it doesn't really feel complete. Even granting the small size of the town, it feels like it treats gayness/lesbianism as the newfangled thing the young folks are doing.
Let's just say, if there ARE ever any new (canon) nonmarriagable villagers, it would be nice to have a pair of discreet old spinsters, or some such.
