Well, get some of the catalogues first, if you didn't already got them (Furniture, Wallpaper/Flooring, Junimo, Wizard, Joja, Retro, Trash) Some special decoration can also be bought at festivals or earned from quests/heart events. And click through this folder, there are so many ideas here. Maybe a theme connected to your spouse like Beach for Haley, Sports for Alex, Books for Elliott and Harvey, monsters/graveyards for Abby, wood and plants for Leah...
My houses are mostly upgraded as much as possible, I usually have a room for the Trophys and/or Fishes, always a library and a little "office", sometimes a magical attic and the rest of the house more or less cozy with lots of fireplaces, chill out areas and so on...

A office is so hypocritical since the farmer escapes one at the start of the game lmfaoo. A library looks really good in a house.

Well, if you run a Farm properly, you will also have to do this accounting stuff, paying the bills and so on... when I get the Farm Computer from Demetrius I usually put it in there and all of the catalogues. It's kind of a cozy home-office, not like this grey cube you have at Joja...

I don't do themes too often for my house; with the somewhat small selection of furniture items, you can only get so creative. But! There are a couple things you can pull off I'm sure!
You can do a nature theme, though you'd probably have the most fun with that only after getting the Junimo catalog.
Personally, I think the Wizard catalog is a necessity when decorating your farmhouse, just for the decorative books. If you have the Wizard catalog you could make a big library! That's what I did. I went for a big fantasy vibe.
You could do a dark spooky manor, the Dark Piano being a staple.
Or you could do a sunny desert yellow theme, specifially like this image I just found on Pinterest.
Whatever you end up choosing you gotta show it off!!! <3

I've seen some really successful wizard-esque or junimo themes.
If you're lost with the variety of furniture, try restricting yourself to just one type of catalogue, and see where that takes you. You may end up with something like a full retro-themed house which works really well
