I just love the vibes in Akira.Surprised at so many Akira mentions. I mean, I watched it too, and I thought it was pretty foundational, and really tells you a lot about early anime (same goes for the original Gundam). I'm not sure I would come right out and say it's a favorite. I'd rank it as a classic, and very important historically, but there are others I enjoyed more. Perhaps I'm just a bit squeamish.
Along those lines, I thought Mononoke Hime was extremely good, but also more than a little disturbing. It freaked me out a LOT. Strangely, I have not seen a lot of other Studio Ghibli. It was very difficult to get hold of subtitled versions for a long time, and by the time it got easier, I was back in school and working full time, and didn't have the time or money to indulge.
