Well, the dreaded video stutter is back with macOS Ventura 13.0.1. I had held off on updating to Ventura until at least its first minor update. It seems to be very much like the stutter that cropped up when I updated to macOS 12 Monterey. Some of the time, the video is fine, but fairly often it will start stuttering as the background scrolls during running or horseback riding. After some number of seconds of stuttering it will stop, only to repeat a little while later. If moving around on a non-scrolling background, say near the edge of a region, my character's movement can also suffer from spells of stuttering.

Back on macOS 12 Monterey, Concerned Ape fixed the stuttering with game version 1.5.6. It had been fine throughout all this time (I play almost every day), until I updated my Mac to Ventura today.

Sorry to hear that, but I guess the more people report the problem, the more likely it is to get attention. I don't know if it's something that Concerned Ape can fix on his end. I hope that either he or Apple will come through for us soon.

As it stands, the stutter is bad enough that it is almost nausea inducing. It's causing me to put my favorite game of all time on the shelf for now. Under the current circumstances, I don't think I could even recommend it to anyone.

I also have a Mac with Ventura and sometimes have lag/stuttering, but I use a lot of mods. I don't remember when it first started but now that I think about it, maybe it was after I updated my computer to that version?

I also have this problem. LOL... lord. I had installed a couple of new mods before I updated my system, and I was testing, and wondering... what the heck... what mod did this to my game, but NOPE .... to my surprise ... this thread. Thank for this thread, was feeling crazy. I know my computer was doing fine before. .... ... macs sometimes man...

I have a lot of mods too, but I haven't had issues. I took all mod out today, and the stutter was still there at 100% vanilla.

Now that the iOS update has been released, I wonder if Concerned Ape will have some time look at what's going on with our macOS problem.

Btw, there was a new mod released recently that shows fps. Even though the stutter exists, I have 60 fps, which I found to be interesting information because its feels like lag, but its not? maybe a video issue?

It looks like macOS Ventura 13.2 should be coming out next week. With the iOS version of the game still in the bug-squashing phase, I guess the macOS update is our best hope for the time being.

Well, back to playing other games for now. :-(

Is your's totally unplayable? I can play, it's just very distracting/annoying.

The game is technically playable, but the sporadic periods of video stutter are enough to be slightly nausea inducing. I could probably brute-force my way through, but it's just too unpleasant.

I updated to macOS 13.2 today. Unfortunately, the video stutter is still present. It might occur a little less frequently, but it hasn't improved to the point where I will be playing again.

I suspect we'll have to wait for Concerned Ape to come to the rescue.

So I'm still on Monterey and just to be clear, we're talking about when it lags & stutters while you're walking around? Cause with 3-4 hours of gameplay that's only happening to me once or twice for about 45 seconds to a minute and then it's back to normal. Its not smooth all the time either but it's okay and I'm still enjoying it. I'm on a fully capable Macbook pro. This is the same problem that we're talking about yes?

Yes, the video stutter occurs while walking around. There are periods of stuttering interspersed with periods of perfectly good video. It's variable, but I'd say that I can only rarely run all the way across Cindersap Forest without a period of stuttering.

If I recall correctly, the game developed its first case of stuttering video for me back in the fall of 2021 upon updating to Monterey or perhaps one of the game updates. Then a game update came out, possibly in January of 2022, that fixed the stuttering completely for me. It was rock-solid for months of nearly daily play until Ventura 13.0 came out this past fall (2022), when the second, current case of stuttering appeared.

Just wanted to say I have this problem on mine as well, 2022 MacBook Air m2. Anyone else running on an apple silicon Mac? Controllers don't work very well. I couldn't get an xbox controller to work at all. A ps4 controller sorta works but it's very wonky. I can't really navigate menus with it, I have to supplement with the track pad. It's like the mouse still exists/isn't anchored in the right spot for a controller. Trying to go through menus the cursor is always out of line and can't click on anything. And when doing something like placing a building the cursor just moves downward constantly and it's nearly impossible to place anything without a fight. Seems like there's no love for this game on Mac.

Sadly, today's update to macOS 13.3 did not fix the video stutter problem. Maybe CA will come up with a fix at some point.

CA has announced he's working on Stardew Valley 1.6 (See Tweet or the Twitter sidebar on the wiki). No word on when it will be released.

Here's hoping it fixes the video stutter bug.

Just bought the Steam version, having the same problem on my M1 Macbook Air. Posting here to agree and hope 1.6 fixes it. Or even MacOS Sonoma.
