What fish do you put in a fish pond and why?

Confused

I don't often use fish ponds, but when I do get around to putting them on my farm I like to try and put in Lava Eel. One for financial reasons, and two because I think the red water is funky.

Weird, my fishies didn't change the pond's colour.
The color change threshold for each Fish is different, so you may only need 3 of one Fish and 7 of another before you see the color change, and then it happens the next day after each Pond reaches that magic number. Clearly this due to the various concentrations and color combinations of Fish pee as it cools overnight.

Aren't you glad I didn't say "coagulates"?

oops.

I have a few ponds but the two main ones for me are sturgeon, to make caviar, and rainbow trout hoping for the 0.000001% chance I'll get a prismatic shard!

Crabs because they're cute and i like when they bring me sticks. The pearl i discovered by complete accident, but I was pleasantly pleased to find that Willy was a fellow crab enthusiast. Also snails because I like when they jump when they go up in pop.

Same here. Though I never got one from them yet, and it's year 7.
Plus, I have four more ponds for colour: lava eel, slime jack, void salmon, super cucumber. Just because I love colour.

Sometimes, I put hard-to-catch-fish in a pond in order to get more of them when I don't fancy fishing them again, such as ice pip or octopus.

Sea cucumber - both for Lucky Lunch, and because it’s a loved item for Willy. Willy is a favourite non-romanceable npc of mine, so I’m always certain to give him the two gifts a week. c:

Eel - for the Spicy Eel dish.

Rainbow Trout - they look so pretty in game, and are my favourite looking fish in game. (Edit;; I didn’t know about that extremely low chance of them producing a prismatic shard beforehand. That was a happy surprise lol. Have had it only ever occur just one time, but still. That was a nice surprise).

Sturgeon - For the roe to make caviar.

Squid - for the ink bottle things (the actual name of the item just entirely wiped itself from my mind … -.-) for the Seafoam Pudding dish.

If I’m pursuing Alex, then also Salmon, to make that salmon dish for him.

For aesthetic purposes, I’ve also had fish ponds with the fish that change the colour of the water in them. ^^

Your farm is so pretty! I'm still struggling to format mine with the fish ponds

Isn't Willy upset that you're not giving him starred fish? 😝
Eel - for the Spicy Eel dish.
I agree with @ThePerfectGarden, I get enough Spicy Eel from Serpents. And if I need more, I'll just trade Rubies at the Desert Trader.

Probably because then I don't have to grow Hot Peppers as well; do you have a couple of them in your Greenhouse or in Pots?

Wow, that must have been exciting! What did you use it for? ...or are you hoarding it? ;D

It's just called... Squid Ink. I have to agree with this though, I always keep some squid around so that I can have Squid Ink for cooking.

I use Midnight Squid, though, because they produce more Squid Ink than regular Squids, with the only major draw that they require an Ocean Stone for one of their population quests.

Where do you prefer to catch your Midnight Squid (EDIT: I mean Midnight Carp, keep reading), at Cindersap, the Mountain Lake, or Ginger Island?

I love doing the four colour-changers in a 2x2, often with a 1-wide path in between them. Maybe that'll help??? 🤷

Like this, except I'm still in the process of moving my Fish Ponds around, so not the four different colours. Plus, the snow is ruining the photo, aargh!!!

I thought you caught them on the submarine ride @Hill Myna
True!!! :bchicken: (not sure why I chose the Chicken hmm...)

Sorry, I misspoke (twice!). In my head, I said Midnight Carp the second time in my first post. What came out was Midnight Squid.

Then I misread what you said as Midnight Carp, when actually you said Midnight Squid, which was correct in the sense that I said that and ARGH!!!

...

Okay, correction time: Pretend I said Midnight Carp in my first post. And so posts #52-54 are simply a confusing discussion that never should have taken place.

Let's roll with that!

Never made the Spicy Eel by myself, since you get tons of them from these flying serpents in the SC.

Unfortunately, on my current save of my beach farm on my Switch, I don’t have luck with getting those drops from the green danger noodles. The most Spicy Eel dishes in one trip I’ve had drop on that save were only three (and that was during a swarm on one of the levels). I’ve actually gone through many trips to SC where not a single one dropped for me. >>;; I don’t know why I’m so unlucky for them to drop, but I am. And … I always forget about buying them from the Desert Trader. XD

I did have a couple pots with them, but I tend to grow quite a few during summer. I grew A LOT of them during year 2. Don’t remember why, but I did. lol So, I ended up with a lot of peppers (which I use for both the Spicy Eel dish and also had forgotten to mention the Pepper Poppers dish, love that extra speed since I wash those dishes down with an espresso haha). ^^

Isn't Willy upset that you're not giving him starred fish? 😝
Wait, what? What starred fish? XD If you’re talking about that pink star fish, that’s only in SVE (I believe?), which the ponds I’m referencing that I have/use are for the default/vanilla game on my Switch. ^^

Wow, that must have been exciting! What did you use it for? ...or are you hoarding it? ;D
That one I placed on a small table in my farmhouse as deco, and still have it. Won’t get rid of that specific prismatic shard ever. Haha. I’ve only sold one prismatic shard because I was curious how much it’d sell for. I donated one to the museum and one to the movie theater. I’ve traded 12 in total for 4 rocky candy at the Desert trader. I have gifted five to Alex. The rest I’ve just hoarded the crap out of. I’m now up to a little over a hundred of them. XD

Ja … I remembered the name shortly after I posted and felt so dumb. XD;; it’s such an easy and obvious name, but for some reason my brain still decided to lag out and I couldn’t remember what the dang thing was called.

I didn’t know that Midnight Squid produced more Squid Ink than the normal squid. This is good to know! Danke. ^^
What is the Ocean Stone thing for? I’m gathering a mod?

I prefer the Mountain Lake, since that’s where I would fish for it at the start, before I had Ginger Island unlocked, and so it became a habit, plus I tend to catch a fair amount from the Mountain Lake when fishing there. … and … now I know you can catch Cindersap (did not know that lol). ^^;;

Do you use the Burglar's Ring? It's a must-have IMO.

That makes sense, Hot Peppers definitely give you a lot per season.

And yes for Speed. Definitely the best buff in my opinion; I feel like a slug without it; it's why I despise the Lucky Lunch + Ginger Ale combo!

I've only ever played on Switch, so no mods for me. :D

I was referring to silver/gold/iridium-star (or -quality, same thing) items, like @LRangerR said, which give more friendship points than regular loved gifts. :)

Yeah, I'd be doing something similar! About hoarding – I'm on 134 myself, after a semi-recent trip that gave me 16 more. 😅

But are you saying that you didn't get the Galaxy Sword???
Ja … I remembered the name shortly after I posted and felt so dumb. XD;; it’s such an easy and obvious name, but for some reason my brain still decided to lag out and I couldn’t remember what the dang thing was called.
I mean, there are hundreds (thousands?) of items in this game, so I think it's inevitable that we forget/confuse them numerous times. See above for a great example! ;D

I was referring to what the Wiki calls Pond Capacity quests – the fish stop reproducing until you give them x amount of x items at certain intervals. The Ocean Stone geode-mineral is needed to boost the Midnight Squid's (not getting it wrong a second time ;) ) "population cap" from 8 to 10.
I prefer the Mountain Lake, since that’s where I would fish for it at the start, before I had Ginger Island unlocked, and so it became a habit, plus I tend to catch a fair amount from the Mountain Lake when fishing there. … and … now I know you can catch Cindersap (did not know that lol). ^^;;
Back in 1.4 before the new location was added, I would catch my Midnight Carp at the Mountain Lake too, mainly because the other fish there are more valuable/more exciting to catch.

Then in my primary 1.5 save (Beach Farm on Switch just like you!) I was experimenting to see what fish you could can at the new location, and ended up getting a tonne of Midnight Carp; more than I could use, anyways. :D

Also, I'm holding out hope that the fact that Midnight Carp can be caught at Cindersap might come in handy one day!
