What fish do you put in a fish pond and why?

Up to each of us "Limit"

In my case, i just got only 5.so i have to made some managing.

1. I go for Crab [10 crab and go for Willy] then i empty it.
2. Sturgeon for Caviar
3. Octopus for Ink
4. Slimejack / Lava eel / Void Salmon for some colorful things

With my latest save, I'll try blobfish as most of comment suggest. Thanks for sharing. :)

I do sturgeon first and foremost, since the caviar is a nice, easy moneymaker. After that I start dropping in seasonal fish that I cook with, or hard to find ones, or ones that produce something useful (regular squid give squid ink). Now I think I'll have to try for blobfish on my new save--I'm using the Stardew Valley Extended mod, so my usable space is pretty huge.

Yeah I need to do a sturgeon for the end game stuff.

sea urchin because I like sea urchins
That's so pure! You can't possibly beat this logic :owo: Sometimes, it's not about making a profit, it's just about enjoying the game (I don't even know what Sea Urchins give).
I personally have two Fish Ponds, but I wasn't very imaginative with them. In the first one, I put a Carp because it's a nice looking fish, and in my second one, I put a sturgeon because I knew its roe would make caviar. When I expand my fish farm, I'm not really sure what I'll put in the next ponds. Maybe a Largemouth Bass? Hmmm...

I’m still trying to figure out the ponds. Had squids to stock up on ink, had sturgeon to get caviar for movie theater bundle. Currently trying the following:

Lava Eel - for the highest profit
Blobfish - because people suggest it and it’s 2nd highest on profit (special items spawn very rare)
Octopus - profit is low but it gives Omni Geodes sometimes
Super Cucumber - just to try, suppose to give you iridium ore

Overall I don’t find the ponds too profitable but they are fun for now.

TIP: plan a bit ahead what fish you wish to try. Not only you will need to catch it, you might also require some rare items for pond quests, like artifacts, minerals, or nautilus shells.

Blobfish?! It has a use?

I knew I kept that ugly thing for a reason. OK making another pond and in goes the blobfish, I hope the sturgeons next door pond don't get jealous.

I have Sturgeon and Eel.
Stugeon because Sturgeon gives me eggs for Caviar, and I need Eels to make that dish that make you faster, that I now use daily.
Other times I use the pond to make rare fishes for some recipes, so I don't need to fish them again. They are very useful.

Wow! this thread has inspired me too. I had one pond and chose coral for making my preferred fertilizer. So I was bumming that I couldn't try other fish. Then I realized I had enough room for another pond and off to fish up some seaweed I went. The pond is being built as I type.

Slightly off topic: how are you guys taking images of your entire farm?

There are pretty in-depth directions in the beginning of the valley showcase thread for how to take photos. I play on my phone so I just take a screenshot. Which, admittedly, isn’t the best option.

Even on mobile you can still capture your entire farm, the post you mention explains how :)

Fun fact, blobfish look like normal fish in their natural habitat, and the reason they are seen as ugly is because their skin isn't meant for human habitats and the skin becomes deformed and fleshy.

I like the eels because they say funny things. like "hey Bub can you get me a...." or "ha-cha-cha-cha that hits the spot!" very impractical, very silly.

First pond? Sturgeon. As soon as I have a few sturgeon roe, however, I empty it.

After that? Lava eels, blobfish, ice pips for their roe and rare drops. Eel, flounder, midnight carp and squid (or midnight squid) for cooking ingredients.

If I don't get a caviar at the traveling cart, I do sturgeon. Once when I couldn't seem to catch one, I bought one and put it in a pond to fill the bundle and get the caviar!
I've also done crabs for the pearl, and then sold the crabs after.
If there are certain fish you want for recipes, for fishing, speed, or luck buffs, or to give as loved gifts, the fish pond is great. Sea cucumbers for lucky lunch, tuna for fish tacos (Gus & Caroline's favorite), rainbow trout for trout soup, eel for fried eel (Jodi loves) or spicy eel (Abigail loves), sardine for dish o the sea, flounder & midnight carp & squid or midnight squid for seafoam pudding (plus calamari is Pierre's favorite), clams or lobsters for chowder or bisque, shrimp for cocktail, crabs for crab cakes (Elliot loves), snails for escargot (Gus loves), crayfish mussel & periwinkle for fish stew, Alex's salmon dinner.
Abigail loves pufferfish, Penny loves sandfish, Elliot loves lobster, wizard loves super cucumbers, Vincent loves snails, Willy loves catfish sturgeon octopus and sea cucumbers.
The wiki page about fish ponds gives the details about what each fish might request, and which rewards they give. Some of my favorites have been ice pip, ghost fish, spook fish, blobfish, stone fish, woodskip, and rainbow trout.
Since each fish pond takes 25 tiles, same as a full iridium sprinkler, they are not great money makers. But there are fish that will add value to your game overall, by giving buffs or helping you build friendships or collect useful items, or just increasing your enjoyment of the game!

I only have 5. Blobfish, Rainbow Trout (They've only given me one prismatic shard but they popped up with a rainbow shell right when I was doing the Qi quest and hit the request in early fall when I'd sold all of them off...), Stingrays, lava eels, and super cucumber. I used to have squid and sturgeon but replaced the sturgeon with the stingrays and cleared the squid pond when I had well over 50 squid ink in the fridge and needed to be able to place more grass for my beasties so they wouldn't eat their area empty in just 2 weeks.

If I had room for more I'd probably add sea cucumbers and flounder and actually fish the ponds more often.
