What is the most efficient way of farming hardwood?

So hardwood is the last thing I need to repair the ship, and I've been spending the winter going to the forest and chopping it, but so far I'm near the end of the month and I only have 44, I'm just asking if there's any quicker way as at the pace I'm going I'll be at year 5 before I finish this.

Before repairing the boat...

The logs and stumps on your farm, and the stumps in the Secret Woods. Note, these can drop "mahogany" seeds. Mahogany trees are a type of wild tree (oak, maple and pine being the others), that when chopped down gets you hardwood. Early on, I plant every mahogany seed I get, and as soon as the tree is fully grown, I chop it down and replant it.

Oh thank you! I wondered what the use of those seeds were, i'll start planting them. I might be able to repair the boat before year five now

Mahogany trees grow SLOW. Use tree fertilizer.

Also what I do is create a self-replenishing copse of trees. Plant a few rows with all the seeds 1 space apart (otherwise they don't grow fully), and fertilize. After they are fully grown leave then sit awhile. They will seed the surrounding area. Cut out the fully grown ones and wait.

Alright, I'm guessing peirre sells tree fertiliser?

Wild trees grow in stages. Stage 1 is the seed and stage 5 is the fully grown tree. There is a chance every night for a tree to advance to the next stage, and at 4 you have to get that chance twice before you get to stage 5... but tree fertilizer makes that chance 100%, so every night it'll advance a stage except it will take 2 night at stage 4 before you have a tree 5 days after planting.

Mahogany... that 100% chance is only 60% here, because these guys advance slower. It'll take, on average, about a week and a half to two weeks for mahogany trees to grow to full size.

Make sure you get all stumps in the secret woods. There are a few in a hidden area at the bottom.

You can also find hardwood in crates in the mines, or from regular trees with the Lumberjack perk.

This. You should be able to get 12 hardwood every time you go to the secret woods - I'm guessing you're not getting all of them if you're only at 44 hardwood.

In the Mines . Lvl 40-60 :) If you have unlocked the "hard-version" of the mines ;)
Since OP is trying to get to Ginger Island, they presumably haven't unlocked that yet.

Yeah, I make a Tree Farm!

However because I both didn't want v1.5 spoilers and generally lack reading comprehension, I never planted any Mahogany seeds when I got them. I mean you can't even make them into a Field Snack so they're completely useless window dressing, right? Does the game tell you anywhere that they grow to hardwood trees? I'm notorious about not immediately seeing the function in something and then just discarding it as useless until some other caveman clubs me on the head saying: Did you try to do/use it?

At which point the pendulum swings completely the other way I make the most utterly overkill setup with said resource so not only is my need almost immediately met, but all else is cast aside in the mad rush so I'm not only left with an excess of formerly useful inventory, but with a shortage of almost everything else. The Economist's Night Terrors.

If ever you want to bring a big box store or Amazon to it's knees, ask them to hire me for stock management.

This, um...yeah...You need to slow down and just think for a little bit, girl. Oye x.x Acting like that you really are no better than a caveman, h ahaha.

While your selection of trees is quite volumetrically apparent, it's imbued with a certain naturalistic feel which suggests a lassiez-faire approach to Swietenia cultivation. Would you consider instead the cruel efficiency of mechanical alignment in order to more forcefully establish your dominion over all facets of vegetable husbandry? Rows of Columbines and columns of Roses make for the most Officelike spreadsheet of Farms and the Trees must be shackled thusly, otherwise they will assume the freedom to dream of unfettered fecundity.

Show 'em who's boss!

Honestly, while the methods you suggest might increase yields, I have more than enough money than I need, and get donations from the locals to further my goals (thank you Kent). Honestly, it might take time, but with a little husbandry, or greensbandry, the forest grows itself. All I need to do is harvest it's fruits when it's ready. The more i let it grow, the more i benefit.

In all seriousness, I've twice now lost a full stack of 999 hardwood in the mines and did not care at all. Of course I wasn't going to say this in this thread because I wanted the OP to discover hardwood in his own time, but honestly, I enjoy how well my farm stays healthy at all seasons when it comes to al kinds of wood.
