Screen Freeze on Intel UHD Graphics – ThinkPad T14s Gen 1
I am experiencing recurring screen freezes while playing Stardew Valley on a Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 1.

System:
  • Intel Core i7
  • 32 GB RAM
  • Intel UHD Graphics
  • Intel graphics driver 31.0.101.2137 (August 28, 2025)
  • Windows 11
  • Stardew Valley latest version
  • SMAPI 4.5.2 when using mods
Problem:
After playing for some time, the entire game screen suddenly freezes. The game appears to continue running in the background (mouse can still move and audio may continue), but the display no longer updates. I have to force-close the game through Task Manager.

The issue also occurs when playing without mods, so it does not appear to be caused by a specific mod.

I have already tried:

  • DDU and reinstalling the Intel graphics driver
  • Verifying game files
  • Playing without mods
  • Changing graphics/display settings
  • Testing different window modes
  • Checking SMAPI logs
  • Running OpenGL tests
No obvious SMAPI error appears before the freeze.

I have also encountered Windows LiveKernelEvent 141 related to igdkmd64.sys / GEN9CFL_OGL_PAGEFAULT.

Important finding:
The freeze occurs when running Stardew Valley normally, but after i switch Stardew Valley to the Compatibility Version through steam, I was able to play for several days without experiencing the freeze.

The freeze is intermittent and can take several hours to occur; in one test, it happened after more than 3 hours of gameplay.

Because Compatibility Mode appears to prevent the problem, I suspect there may be a compatibility issue between Stardew Valley's rendering/OpenGL implementation and the Intel UHD graphics driver.

Could this be investigated?

The next time you play, watch the GPU usage tab in the task manager under Performance > GPU and report if it suddendly spikes when the game freezes.

I’ve played the game several times while monitoring the GPU performance in Task Manager. Every time a freeze occurred, the GPU performance, which had been stable, suddenly dropped and disappeared completely. Currently, I’m playing the game in compatibility mode, and I haven’t experienced any freezes at all.
