Windows BUG - Possible SDL2.dll graphics initialization issue

I wanted to report a strange graphics issue I ran into with Stardew Valley that may be related to SDL2.dll.

I am running Stardew Valley on a PC with an AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT 16 GB. This was modded stardew at one point, but since then I also uninstalled and had the same issue on clean install on a seperate drive.

The problem
When launching the game normally, Stardew Valley becomes essentially unusable. The menu is laggy/freezing, and can't even get inside the game. I've seen other issues posted where people are having issues with it recognizes their graphics card, maybe similar issue?

However:
  • Compatibility Mode: Works normally
  • Normal/current version: ~1 FPS
  • Normal/current version after replacing SDL2.dll with the one from the Legacy version: Works normally
I originally tried Compatibility Mode and confirmed that the game itself could run correctly.

I then copied the SDL2.dll from the Legacy Stardew Valley installation into the normal/current Stardew Valley installation. After doing that, it works perfectly.

So the only change between the broken and working normal versions was the SDL2.dll.

I also first tried different versions of AMD graphics drivers that didn't solve the issue.

System
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT 16 GB
  • OS: Windows
  • Stardew Valley: current version

This makes me wonder if there is an issue with the newer SDL2.dll and how it initializes the graphics system on certain hardware/driver combinations. Maybe this is just a me issue, but I wanted to report it in case this fixes anyone else's issue.
