I had originally wanted to just repeat floor 1 to get stone (as my mines are set to dangerous and the stone is harder to mine there than in the skull cavern)

Actually I like spamming floor one of the dangerous mines for stone. The "dangerous" rocks that look like little meringues drop 2-4 stone per (just skip the rest), and there's a much better chance of getting lots of them than even one big 10-stone rocks when the mines are normal. I get an average of 30 and a high point of 50 stone per reload, and you don't ever have to walk far ;).

Problem is, I want to get the stupid clock out of the way, so I'm not too crazy about spending a fortune on rocks...

Rock is denser in the volcano. When I need a lot of rock fast, bombing the first few volcano floors usually gets me there.

Using a Deconstructor on Staircases (which you've traded for in the Calico Desert) is a good lategame option for getting lots of Stone, too.
