Well, get some of the catalogues first, if you don't already got them (Furniture, Wallpaper/Flooring, Junimo, Wizard, Joja, Retro, Trash) Some special decoration can also be bought at festivals or earned from quests/heart events. And click through this folder, there are so many ideas here. Maybe a theme connected to your spouse like Beach for Haley, Sports for Alex, Books for Elliott and Harvey, monsters/graveyards for Abby, wood and plants for Leah...
My houses are mostly upgraded as much as possible, I usually have a room for the Trophys and/or Fishes, always a library and a little "office", sometimes a magical attic and the rest of the house more or less cozy with lots of fireplaces, chill out areas and so on...
