Chapter 6.

“Be back by ten!” Jodi called after Sam’s retreating figure. He sent a few pacifying responses in return before closing the door. As soon as he left the house, his face broke into a grin. He is going to Abby’s like he told his mom he would, he’s just going to make a few stops on the way.
The first one is to Haley’s house. Sam likes Haley. She’s maniacal in the best way possible, and Sam honestly loves it. Not that he would ever say that in front of his friends. Both Abigail and Sebastian think she’s “way vapid” and “like really superficial”. Sam rolled his eyes. He loves his friends, sure, but their weird beef with Haley and Alex was really dumb.
He knocked on the door, jumping a little when it opened abruptly to reveal a shock of blue hair.
“Sam!” Emily exclaimed. “It’s so good to see you!”
Sam grinned at her. “Hey Ems. Nice to see you too.”
“Haley’s in her room. Want me to get her?”
“That’d be great, thanks!”
He waited on the doorstep while Emily got Haley, hoping his mom wouldn’t look at the window and see him. Haley joined him after a moment.
“Hey, loser,” she said fondly. Sam smiled.
“Thank god. Haley, something’s up.”
Haley looked solemn. “I know. The two freaks you hang with are acting more freakish than usual.”
Sam nodded intently. “Totality. I’m so glad someone noticed!”
“It’s so obvious! How could anyone miss it!” Haley exclaimed. “Come in, I have something to show you.”

Haley’s usually cute bedroom was dominated by a large poster board hanging on her wall. Blurry polaroids were pinned up on it, with red pen annotations. Sam whistled.
“Hot damn, girl. This is insane.”
Haley looked proud. “Isn’t it? It took so much effort.”
Sam looked closer at the board. The photos weren’t put up randomly, he noticed. They were shaped in a vague spiral, leading to one spot in the center of the board.
He tapped his finger on the spot. “What goes here?”
Haley turned to where he was pointing.
“Oh! I forgot!” She reached into her bag and withdrew a photo. “I was about to put this up when you knocked.” Haley pinned it up deftly. It was of a woman Sam didn’t recognize. She was pretty, but in an evil way. It gave him the chills.
“Who’s that?”
“I don’t know her name. Everyone just calls her the farmer.”
