Some thoughts on romance options

Was looking for mods for my next run and that brought me to thinking on stuff.
I've bought the game day 1, been playing ever since. Even modded some. And while I can't say how many runs I've been through (lost count), one interesting metric I do remember - two of them my character was rooming with Krobus and one time ended up with Mateo from Swords & Sorcery mod.
The rest was all Sebastian. Every time.
And if YouTube is any evidence, I'm far from being the only one like this. Seb outranks every other romance options in the game COMBINED. Shane is pretty much always next in popularity, and while the gap varies from poll to poll, it is always monstrously large. And it got me thinking on why it is so.
Seeing as the game is moddable icon, the visuals instantly get tossed out the window, as it's not a rocket science to make any NPC look whatever you want and there are already TONS of options available, from manga-styled, to pseudorealistic, to fantasy-like.
Writing goes the same way, for the same reason.
But if Seb's popularity isn't in those two, then... what is left? Well, I think you know.
If you analyze all other villager's stories, you find out a common premise - most of the time, you the player aren't needed at all for things to change for the better, you're just there to witness it.
Hailey and Emily have their lives already put together, sure, you provide Haley a shoulder to cry on that one time, but that's it - it's a one time moment, and it's not a significant one, just a girl missing her parents working overseas. It's not like they are dead or have abandoned them, or whatev, they will come back eventually. They even call and send money to the sisters.
Sam, Vincent, Jodi and Kent also have their lives figured out without you - Kent knows he needs help and eventually moves in the direction of getting it himself, he is the one bringing up the Guild when you talk to him, not you. You can give your opinion on whether it would be worth it, but the decision is his.
Eliot will write his novel with or without your envolvement. You help him to zero-in on the genre, but notice that he already has his options narrowed down to three - which means he is capable of choosing on his own, you'll just speed it up a bit.
Shane is the closest on the list of actually needing your help to turn his life around, but... nope, it's Jaz and Marnie who do the healing for him, not you. He'll sober up just fine on his own if you won't pursue the relationship with him.
And then we have Seb...
By the start of the game, Seb is in absolute pit of misery - he's alone, feeling betrayed by his entire family (first his father disappearing into the sunset, then his mother bringing home another man WITH ANOTHER KID, don't tell me that doesn't hurt) and replaced by his step-sibling, struggles with severe self-esteem issues (his later dialogue about Maru's successes with robotics and him trying to match her with his mechanical and programming performance shows how insecure he actually is about his own value), and on top of all that - his plan to fix it is to MOVE TO ZUZU. Read - make an already bad situation even worse, introverts and big cities very much do NOT mix. And while, yeah, he won't actually go anywhere if you won't pursue the relationship with him, that is not because this is the intention here, that's because of the game engine and resource limitations.
Seb is the only one in Pelican town who actually NEEDS help. Needs YOU.
I've seen an opinion popping up here and there pairing him with Abigail, but, um... no? There is literally not a single hint in the game that these two see each other as anything other than friends. They hang out together, yes, but at that point Sam is also part of the band and I don't see many people pairing Seb with him (some do, that's the SDV fandom we're talking here). So again it circles back to him only having a chance at "Happily Ever After" if a player character shows interest. Other than that - he'll either remains a miserable basement shut-in, or will eventually leave for Zuzu to be even more miserable corporate rat there. Either way - nothing good.
And I think people pick up on that. Majority of the SDV-fandom are empathetic sentimental folks (according to polls on YouTube at least), meaning they could tell where their presence is needed, and who just wants a free audience.

And now Eric has advertised making Clint a romance option. Which is... eeeeeerm... an interesting prospect, to say the least? The guy is clearly infatuated with Emily, if anything, the more logical development should be helping him get involved with her. Not sure what roads are even exists there to lead into relationships with the player character without getting on us being either a datebuster or a "plan B" territory, which won't feel good... Not saying Eric shouldn't do it, just kinda... concerned about how it all would work. Worst case scenario we will get another option nobody would pick outside of challenge \ meme runs.
Meanwhile there is a completely untapped potential of villager pairings, like, the options player didn't picked getting together on their own. I think playing matchmaker for your friends would've been very interesting and could really add some life in later years. That would also help more sentimental people to not feel guilty about trying other options if they could help Seb find somebody else for his ever after, you know? But of course that's the whole other can of worms.

Well, that's my thoughts on the matter. Feel free to add yours now~

I think you are identifying something real about why Sebastian is so popular, but I do not completely agree with the conclusion that he is the only candidate who actually “needs” the player.

Sebastian probably does have one of the strongest senses of unresolved momentum among the romance candidates. He is alienated from his family, insecure about his work, resentful toward Maru, and convinced that moving to Zuzu City will solve a problem that is mostly following him internally. That naturally makes his route feel more consequential than someone like Elliott, who will keep writing regardless of whether the farmer romances him, or Harvey, whose life is already fairly stable.

There is also a very effective fantasy built into Sebastian’s route: everyone else misunderstands him, but the player sees the real person underneath. Because he is so withdrawn, becoming the person he opens up to feels exclusive. I can absolutely understand why that appeals to people.

Where I disagree is the idea that a character improving without the player makes their romance less meaningful.

Shane getting sober without marrying the farmer is not a weakness. I would argue that it is healthier than making his recovery dependent on being romantically chosen. Jas and Marnie should matter to him. His responsibility toward Jas should matter more than whether the farmer wants to date him.

The same applies to Sam. His family eventually confronting Kent’s trauma without the player does not make Sam irrelevant as a romance option. His strongest material is tied to his music, Sebastian, Abigail, Jodi, Vincent, and Kent. The problem with his marriage route is not that he does not need rescuing. It is that becoming a spouse can pull him away from the relationships and ambitions that made him interesting.

Emily is another example. She appears to have her life together, but that does not mean she has no emotional needs. She works constantly, supports everyone, mediates other people’s problems, and is often treated as the harmless weird girl. A good romance with Emily would not need to rescue her from some obvious disaster. It would need to recognize the emotional labour hidden beneath how cheerful and functional she appears.

That is probably my broader disagreement with the idea that the strongest romance candidate is the one who would be most miserable without the player. That can create an intense romance fantasy, but it can also become a rescue fantasy where the player is made into the candidate’s therapist, escape route, substitute family, and only source of self-worth.

I do not think Sebastian’s problem is that nobody except the farmer could ever reach him. Sam notices him. Abigail clearly cares about him. Robin loves him, even if she has failed to understand how badly he feels neglected. Maru is part of the conflict he actually needs to confront. His existing relationships are not meaningless simply because the game does not fully develop them.

I also think saying there is “literally not a single hint” toward Sebastian and Abigail is too strong. It is fair to say the game never confirms them as a romantic pairing, but they are repeatedly placed together, share a friend group and overlapping interests, and are clearly written in a way that makes the pairing easy to imagine. Whether someone likes that pairing is a different question.

The Clint issue is interesting for similar reasons. I agree that making him romanceable could go badly if the route simply transfers his fixation from Emily to the farmer. That would absolutely risk making the player feel like a backup option. But it could work if the route forced Clint to confront whether he ever truly knew Emily, why he remained passive for so long, and how he handles someone genuinely choosing him rather than merely relying on his work.

I would personally love to see more autonomous relationships develop among villagers the player does not choose. Not necessarily because everyone needs to be paired off, but because the town should continue living after the player chooses a spouse. Characters should still change, leave, reconcile, date, fail, and build lives that do not wait indefinitely for the farmer.

So I think Sebastian’s popularity does reveal a real weakness in the romance system: his route creates a stronger feeling that the player’s presence changes his future.

I just would not phrase the ideal romance as “this character needs you.”

I would phrase it as: the relationship should meaningfully change both people without taking away either person’s agency, ambitions, friendships, or ability to grow on their own.

Hot take: I actually think Sebastian is the romance candidate who needs the farmer the least.

His main problem is not that he lacks love. He already has people who care about him. Robin cares about him. Sam cares about him. Abigail cares about him. Even Maru probably cares about him despite how badly their family dynamic has deteriorated.

What Sebastian lacks is guidance, confrontation, and the willingness to examine his own assumptions.

He feels replaced by Maru. He resents Demetrius. He believes Robin has chosen her new family over him. He wants to leave for Zuzu City. But he never really confronts any of them about what happened. He does not ask Robin why she failed to protect him, tell Maru how much the comparison damaged him, or force Demetrius to acknowledge how he treated him.

He mostly withdraws and assumes everyone will move on without him.

Marriage to the farmer does not necessarily solve that. In some ways, it gives him another route of avoidance. He can leave the basement and move to the farm without ever resolving the family conflict that made the basement unbearable.

I understand why some people find that romantic. The farmer becomes the one person who sees him, chooses him, and gives him somewhere else to belong.

But I find it depressing.

Sebastian does not need someone to rescue him from his family as much as he needs help confronting his family—and confronting the parts of himself that believe disappearing is the same as moving forward.

Could marrying the farmer eventually lead to something good? Absolutely. A supportive relationship could give him enough safety to grow.

But the route itself does not really show that growth. It mostly changes his location.

He leaves the basement. He does not necessarily leave the avoidance behind.
