Silly Mistakes You've Made?

I didn't know the upgraded Hoe tilled multiple spots.
I didn't know Weapons had a second attack or a block.
I didn't know you could stand on one crop spot and Till/Water/Fertilize/Harvest the block of 9 adjacent ones without moving.
I didn't know the Sword and Scythe don't use Energy. Ended up accidentally using my Axe or Rod and getting Exhausted all the time.
I didn't know you couldn't marry Caroline.

And loads of others long since forgotten. I mega-noobed my way through my first save and it was so great!

I play on mobile, so some of this might not be accurate for other platforms, and activate it when I touch the screen where a monster is (and sometimes other times) With a sword, it's a block, stopping an attack at that moment from harming you. Dagger has a rapid stab thing, and the hammer has a slam with strong knockback. In the item bar the weapon gets a diminishing vertical bar marking the cool-down time until you can use it again.

Just to clear it up for anyone playing on other platforms, it's a 'secondary attack'. It triggers (with a cooldown) when you press the other main interaction button (the one you use to open doors for example) when holding the weapon.

  • On my first playthrough, I read the letter from Evelyn about crops dying at season change and I laughed loudly because it seemed so obvious. Guess what I did nonetheless a few days before the end of my first Spring? You guess right: I felt so stupid on first day of Summer with all my withered crops...
  • I learned the hard way to change IMMEDIATELY my inventory slot when Maniac Kent mails me one of the bombs that he keeps on his shelves... What a lovely man. Tell me Kent, how many children do you have at home?
  • I went numerous times to the Mines/Volcano/Skull Caverns... only to realise there that I've stashed my weapon/pickaxe in a chest at the farm.

you can just drop the big chest on an existing chest and don't have to do nearly as much shuffling around of stuff as I did.
What.

O My Word. I'm on my third save and I didn't realize that was possible until I saw this. Since I'm also a hoarder thrifty with my supplies, I've been doing so much shuffling!! Egad, this is going to revolutionize my storage! THANK YOU!

Going fishing for Legend II, only to get to the lake and realize I didn't have any bait on my rod. Then realizing I should've got extra tackle too, since at least two sets are needed for a day of fishing. Definitely didn't have my ducks in a row that day, not even with having just one duck.

When I first started the game, I didn't know how to leave the pause menu/inventory, so I didn't play until about three months later when I finally figured out how to unpause.
This is such a mood! My friend stopped playing because she couldn't figure out how to open her door. I played co-op at first and the other players had to get back out of bed the first night to come to my cabin and demonstrate how to get into the bed because I couldn't figure it out.

And that you could un-hoe spots of tilled dirt with a pickaxe.
I had the opposite problem, I kept accidentally hitting crops with my pickaxe. My friends started making me only hold the scythe unless I was actively using a different tool.

There is always a learning curve. I definitely spent a lot of time reloading the day in Harvest Moon. Many of the core mechanics are the same or very similar, so I got a lot of these glitches ironed out before I ever started playing Stardew Valley. For example, I had long ago trained myself not to run around holding anything in my hands, for fear of running into a villager and gifting it to them. The moment I see my farmer holding anything above their head, I immediately flip through the inventory slots until they are holding the scythe or a weapon (and this is another ingrained tactic, because if I accidentally trigger using the tool, at least swinging around the scythe/weapon does not eat up energy).
