Is there any point in keeping books once you have achieved mastery?

You can trade to bookseller, but not many options besides that and using some to dye clothing.

Or as gifts to certain people, if you still need to give gifts.

I believe you might be able to place books on tables for decoration, though it may be that you just read it instead. I don't know if I've seen anyone try this.

Yes. Money! Many sell for more than the best crops or animal produce just plop them in the shipping bin. If you find them in the mines and run out of room you still get a pretty good price in an iridium trash can. Also they can be traded for some more expensive to make or harder to find in game items but unless you want or need those shipping is best bet.
