Petting animals

Hi everyone, quick question. If animals/pets already have the maximum number of hearts, is there any reason to keep petting them every day?

Yes. If you don't, they'll lose friendship, unless you've got an Auto-petter in the coop/barn. Feel free to ignore your pet though, unless you want to see if it's got a present for you.

eating fresh grass gives more points than they lose at full hearts, so unless it’s winter or a really rainy week, this will offset any lost points quickly.
Even more with blue grass, so much so that you just don't have to pet them entirely (-10 friendship maximum from not petting, and +16 from eating blue grass), though it's probably not too helpful for that purpose unless you're starting with meadowlands.

Apart from Skull Cavern treasure rooms, you can also get them rarely from golden mystery boxes, or as a special drop from monsters in the Mine if it's in "dangerous" mode. The first (and so far only) time a monster dropped one I went "It dropped WHAT?" followed by a scramble to make space for it in my backpack.
I wouldn't advise farming for them via monsters, however, as it's a really rare drop from already fairly rare special monsters. If you do find a nice monster floor and found one in a day though, you may consider experimenting with some fences as you can find the tile/s that they drop the autopetter on and can get like half a dozen in a day.

I know it's more of a bonus than something to actively pursue. Which is why I still remember my surprise when one dropped. Less than 0.2% chance of a non-slime monster dropping a special item, and then 2% of that to have an auto-petter drop. Didn't know the drop thing is connected to what tile the monster's on, but it makes sense and doesn't surprise me all that much.
