Yes. If you don't, they'll lose friendship, unless you've got an Auto-petter in the coop/barn. Feel free to ignore your pet though, unless you want to see if it's got a present for you.

You can randomly get them inside the Skull Cavern, or you can buy them from JojaMart if you go the Joja route.

eating fresh grass gives more points than they lose at full hearts, so unless it’s winter or a really rainy week, this will offset any lost points quickly.
