Windows "No free slots in server" message appears when using a controller

Every time I open the menu while using a controller, the message "No free slots in server" appears — even when playing in single-player. However, if I play with keyboard and mouse, no message pops up whatsoever.

The only co-op game I’ve played was with my girlfriend, and we have a separate save for our co-op farm. I’ve never played co-op with my personal save. What could be causing this?

By the way, I tried uploading my save file to this thread, but I can't seem to do it. Do I need to convert the save file to a different file extension?

good luck. i can't even get a controller to work wtih teh game at all on PC and it doesn't seem to be a priority at all. been a persistent bug for over a year.
