I think it might be time for another backpack upgrade.

With 1.5 and 1.6 there have been quite a few new additions to the drop pool for fishing, foraging, combat, and mining, and even with both backpack upgrades I’ve been running into unusually frequent instances of having to trash rare items while doing some light fishing, scavenging, or adventuring. As such, I feel it might be time for a third backpack upgrade.

As for when this should be made available, there are a few ideas:
  • Purchased from Pierre’s for 50,000g — this would be the most obvious option, but it’s kinda bland
  • Traded from the Desert Trader — this would create an interesting opportunity for a unique cost, but it could also put too much emphasis on completing the vault bundle
  • Reward for completing the mastery cave — this would have a satisfying thematic feel to it and would coincide with some of the most recent inventory-flooding culprits: trinkets, golden mystery boxes, golden animal crackers, golden fishing treasure chest loot, and extra gems from gem rocks
  • Traded from the Island Trader — like the Desert Trader, this would create an opportunity for an interesting cost, but, instead of being locked behind one bundle, it would be locked behind the entire community center (or Joja Warehouse)
  • Purchased from the Walnut Room — certainly an option, but I feel this would be too late in the game to matter, as at that point you’re probably trashing everything that isn’t 1000 kegs of starfruit or ancient fruit wine

"Item bags" is a mod that I've been using occasionally. It doesn't cause a mess but it's easy to forget what you have put in the bag, as they won't show.

I'm absolutely pro - it was a suggestion I thought about to put in here myself.
Out of your propositions, I would reject the first and the last one. The first one would be bland indeed, and Qi's Walnut Room is nothing I would like to support any more (there's enough stressing quests in it).
Desert Trader and Island Trader are okay, but personally the mastery cave speaks to me the most.

Bumping this for visibility since 1.7 is confirmed. I would like to see more thoughts/opinions on the matter.

Coming back to this, I think it being a reward for Mastery Cave completion is the best way to implement this. It wouldn't be locked behind a simple paywall, wouldn't put too much emphasis on a particular CC bundle, and wouldn't be so late-game that it would feel like a cheap reward. This would feel like an organic, mid-game reward earned for hard work across all skills.

These two points are little over a season apart, depending on walnut gathering speed and how many Qi gems it would cost to buy in the walnut room, unless the backpack upgrade would require reaching Perfection just like the golden eggs.

There's the crow in the Secret Woods where you can buy back some rare items that were trashed. Letting more items into this mechanism might be another option.
oooh, that could be interesting. I legitimately have never even seen that crow other than a random stream I had watched, and I thought it was just a mod.

Speaking of woodland creature vendors, the Raccoon that moves into that downed tree could be another possible source.

While I think everyone would appreciate another backpack upgrade, I find quite a bit of fun in managing my inventory. I try to be much more strategic in what and how much my farmer carries, and I will use "backpack is full" as a signal to stop my current activity and go do something else, whether that is to go chat with villagers or return home and offload loot. It provides a natural break in chores so that I don't spend all day doing only one thing, which I find boring. (I have really, really bad ADHD.) So while again, I think many of us would really enjoy it, I encourage people to look at the current backpack limitations as a challenge to be managed, not a detriment to gameplay. (Also, I find it mildly hilarious that I can dig through trash cans with a full backpack, and then leave whatever I find on the ground basically forever, even if it's valuable or unsightly. No one cares if you litter diamonds or actual trash. I don't know, I think it's funny.)
