I lost my watering can

That's annoying. You can't really accidentally lose a watering can or any tool, really. There are failsafes in the game for the starter tools that can't be bought.
The only thing you can do with a basic tool, as far as I know, is put it in chests (and the fridge).
Do you remember what you did with it last? Did you take it anywhere off the farm?
If you think it got lost in the mines because through some glitch it was taken by a monster in the mines, the crow in the secret woods may have it for you.
Are you playing multi-player? I've hard that in co-op games it could get stuck in other players' inventories, and I read somewhere that Pierre has a "lost tool box" in his shop for multiplayer. (Just going off what I read here, I never played multiplayer...)
Silly question, but did you maybe give it to Clint to upgrade? I know it sounds dumb, but I had this happen once. Spent the whole day hunting for my axe until I remembered it was still at Clint's.
The only other thing I can tell you is to double/triple/quadruple check all your chests and fridges. Including the mini-fridge, any chest you may have in other spots around town, etc. I generally have at least one in the mines, one in the skull cavern and sometimes I have one near a fishing spot, too.
If you look at your chests and in your inventory, the "sort" button will bring all your tools to the first slots. Sometimes that helps me when I've misplaced a tool.

I'm sorry to hear that, it must be frustrating. What I know from playing the game for quite a while is that player tools that are given the first time on the game (let's say it's called main tools) like watering can have a special safety features that makes it undeletable, so there won't be any case that a player lost their tool because of accidentally deleted it.
There are a few things that probably what's happen with your watering can:
- It's being upgraded or has been finished upgraded by Clint but you forgot to take it back. This is commonly happened. You just need to meet Clint after the upgrade is finished.
- It's stored in an inventory (chest, fridge or mini fridge) somewhere. It could be anywhere. You just need to double check it in every inventory that you have.
- As far as what I know, when you're knocked unconscious (due to a 0 health while mining), you'll have a chance to lost some items except for your tools, so it can't be lost.
- Have you ever playing multiplayer mode on that save? Another possible scenario is that you let your friends borrow the watering can and they keep it in their backpack inventory so when they go offline, the watering can is still in their backpack so you couldn't find it anywhere.
I couldn't think of any other scenario. From a normal gameplay (without modding), it's basically impossible to lost a main tools because the game won't let you really lose it in any scenario. But if you're actually lose it (because of using mods), the best and guaranteed to be worked solution is by using the Item Spawner mod. That would be the very last resort to restore the watering can you lost.
