Uuh, sorry, language misunderstanding, you're right. I was thinking German where "the character" is always male form, so his/him. And "the person" is always female in German... sorry, sorry, sorry...
Just use a neutral "they" instead, please.

The mermaid?? The crop fairy?? Lupini??!! Clara Mullner maybe? The racoon’s wife? Any of those?

Yeah, I see, way to much thinking around the corner... Let me summarize:

- no giftable
- no befriendable
- only to be met first after solving a unique quest and
- only to be met occasionally then btw
- helpful for some special quests, but they can be solved also without the character, it's just an extra buff
- someone in Pelican Town might probably get jealous on this character (but that's just a thought of mine, not story Canon)

ARTIFACT SLIME GUST! I swear I got like three dishes from this dude the last desert festival. But that was way too hard. Try easier ones next time lol or it's gonna take a while to guess. Gus doesn't seem like the type of guy to be jealous tho.
