Hello everyone! new to this forum, I posted this on Reddit as well:
Similarly to this previous post by NTHIAO, I'm currently playing on switch with the latest update [1.6.15.3] and find that while defense is having an effect, it's not working as intended.
For context I have 23 defense and tiger slimes (which have a base dmg of 23, and thus should only hit me for 1 dmg as per wiki's current description of how defense works) hit me for a range of numbers, going as high as 12; same thing with the volcano magma sparkle/spirit having base dmg of 15 and I still get hit for sometimes 6 or 8 damage.
I've tested it on stronger monsters too, like the the dangerous mummies that have a dmg range of 38-55 and I do sometimes get hit for as low as 15 dmg (38-23=15), but I will sometimes get hit for 40 damage (55-23=32) which is way higher than what my defense should be affording me. I'm not sure if this is a bug, or if anyone else has been encountering this.
For reference, here is my build:
Taking off my rings and boots and switching weapons then putting them back on doesn't fix it, and restarting the game doesn't fix it. Both myself as a farmhand and my partner who is the main farmer are encountering this issue.

- +7 def from Dwarf Sword (forged with +3 Topaz), (+5 Atk Innate Enchant), with Vampirism Enchant
- +5 def and +8 Immunity from Mermaid Boots
- +1 def from Jack be Nimble, Jack be Thick Book
- Level 5 Fairy
- Defender Combat Profession
