I like to keep a certain order in specific chests for clarity and ease of access. This leaves gaps between items on purpose. But there are several things that mess the item placement, at least some are unintentional I believe. Items rearrange towards upper left corner so that there are no empty slots between items, completely messing any placement. No change in place relative to other items (no alphabetical reordering), so this is not same as using the sort-button for this effect.
When dropping a stack from inventory into a stack in chest and if total amount goes over 999, items rearrange. (In the attached video, I dropped a stack of 999 hays because I was lazy, as the amounts don't matter as long as the total goes above 999.)
When hitting a chest with a tool, items rearrange. I assume this might be on purpose, but it is very annoying to forget you were using a tool and didn't separately deselect it. Even more annoying is when a tool is (randomly?) autoselected.
Sometimes, yet rarely, items have rearranged without any clear reason.
I'll add my save file if it's separately asked for, as it's not a simple thing to dig it out with Android 15 and I don't think this is a save file related problem.
