Probably the only reason I haven't reached perfection or unlocked the CC is because I can never get the hang of fishing. Any tips for me (or other people struggling with fishing)?

I guess you mean the Master Angler achievement, rather than the fishing mastery from the mastery cave.

Short repetitive presses on whatever button you use for the fishing game. I play on a mobile, so I touch the screen instead. Keep the bar behind the fish as much as possible and try to keep it in the middle so you have a chance to follow its movement. Also start with easy fish and buy the training rod as it gives you a bigger bar until you're level 5 (abandon the training rod then). I find the river fish easiest at low level, unless it's raining. Though you could start out by going for Carp and trash/green algae/seaweed. Go for more difficult fish as the bar increases in size or you feel that you can handle them.

Once you have reached level 2, you could complete the crab pot bundle and bait those to help build fishing experience. Fish ponds can also help you build experience without actually having to go fish for it. What you want is the level needed to buy the iridium rod, and later on the advanced iridium rod from getting the fishing mastery. With the advanced iridium rod equipped with deluxe bait, cork bobber and trap lure, I have learned to catch even the Legend without needing too many tries.

I might add that when I tried to play the mobile version of the game on an emulator on my pc, I really disliked fishing as my mousepad is a bit iffy. I could catch Carp somewhat reliably as long as it didn't move outside the bar of the training rod while I did nothing. Managed to download it to my smartphone later. I'm pretty much a complete novice when it comes to smartphones, thanks to a phobia against using a phone to call people. SDV helps me become better friends with it and not just reluctantly lug it along in case someone calls me.

I think going to places with easy fish would help like the mountain or river. I also agree that if you’re really struggling you should buy a training rod or try passive fishing experience gain methods like crab pots and fish ponds.

I suck with fishing too! Crab pots are your friends and if your rich just buy a bunch of em. It's slow but it works.
Yes, they do. I use to solve the Crab Pot Bundle in CC early, so I get three for free. And if you level up friendship with Linus you get the wild bait recipe and they can work for you. Slowly but steady...
Fish Ponds are the same but with more XP.

I think I should get some fish ponds since I don't really need any outside space for farming. (Only crop i farm is Starfruit and that's in the greenhouse. Rest is outsourced to Ginger Island.)

I agree with the people above me. Downside of fish ponds are that they’re kinda expensive and take up lots of space.
