Slingshots

Double checked the guides and resources but not everything, so maybe there's a thread on this, but:

Folks who use slingshots.... why? So far they always seem to be harder to use and do less damage than any close up weapon you get at the same levels. Sure, the slime I shoot from a distance doesn't hurt me but it also takes forever to die and feels like a waste of time I could spend checking the floor of the mine for anything worth mining. Am I doing something wrong?

The slingshot is awesome!
You can use lots of different things for ammo. Explosive ammo is really cool but I like iridium ore the most for damage/enemies. It only takes a few hits to take out a slime. I find it especially great for those big slimes full of little slimes.
I also use the slingshot to trigger flying monsters, like haunted skulls and serpents.
The slingshot can take out shooting monsters while you stay safely out of range. Squid kid only takes one pop! And pepper rex won't even start breathing fire if you don't get close.
Plus, you can use eggs, fruits, or veggies which is hilarious. It takes a lot of salmonberries to eliminate an enemy but it's just funny.

Like @Cptldsilver said, explosive ammo is great for mining. It takes some practice, but once you learn how to use it you can get a lot further down with ammo (and a few bombs) than with just bombs.
I personally don't find it to be worth the ammo cost for fighting enemies (except maybe squid kids because they only have 1hp so you can just hit them with a rock or something). But YMMV.

Oh, and hitting Lewis in the face with an egg? Always worth it.

Just a note without a spoiler: if you chose to not use the slingshot, tuck it in a chest. It comes into play very late game (assuming you have version 1.5). I don't like sling shots and had sold all mine. Had to buy one for something.

My last save went over 8 years and hit perfection and I genuinely can't recall having to use a slingshot early or late (I'd play the game at the fair, though.) Can you explain behind a spoiler tag?

When trying to get all the walnuts on Ginger Island, there is one on a tree next to the volcano and the only way to knock it down is with a slingshot

Pretty cheap though, both the regular and master are nearly worth dirt at the adventurers guild since 1.5 added them to stock.

I've tried and tried to sell my slingshots; nobody's interested.
I've been watching ezlily's SDV videos and getting lots of cool hints. She's a magician with a slingshot, and so fast you don't see it happen. I want to be like her! I've been practicing, but I'm SOO slow. If I don't get a lot better quick (not bloody likely), I'm just going to have to hide it back in a chest and forget I have it. There's a point at which you have to accept the law of diminishing returns.

You need to sell them to marlon directly, no real point though as it’s only two items and if you want to pick up using one again you have to buy another.

Incidentally, you can shoot faster with the "pull back to shoot" control scheme than the "click and hold" control scheme. It's also harder to learn, though.

Sadly I don't use it as using it on console is horrible, but they typically use explosive ammo to replace bombs and the few youtubers I have seen prefer it will put in the rarest ore they can find and stack damage rings to keep all enemies at a distance while they try to heal

Explosive ammo can be a fun way to mine. It's also handy for killing certain baddies that ordinarily wouldn't be killed by your regular weapon. That being said, I rarely ever use it because I tend to put it into a chest and forget I have it until I need it.

On the other hand I use it constantly for any considerable skull cavern run.
