Do I Want a Horse?

How many of you have a horse and do you use it?

Obviously if I can move around 30% faster, and do everything just as easily when walking it would be a slam dunk. But I have questions. Can I forage while on the horse? What about chopping wood or hitting stones?

My guess is I would have to get off the horse every time I want to interact with anything and that this would make its use not worth it.

Maybe it might be worth it if I want to spend the day fishing on Willy's pier; then I could ride it there, fish, and then return home on it. Or the same perhaps when going mining. What happens to the horse if I warp back home while in the mine?

Thanks for your inputs! :)

You want the Horse because it gets you almost anywhere on the map faster than walking. When you have the Minecarts you'll get to a few places faster, but you get to the Minecarts at the Bus Stop faster with the Horse. And crucially, you get home faster from the Bus Stop at 1:30AM with Mr Hoss.

No you won't use the Horse for everything as you can't Forage from Horseback, but you get to the Forage way faster on horseback. And you can talk to people and gather some resources on horseback, like stuff from Fish Ponds.

Yes if you warp home, you will leave your Horse's behind behind but you'll probably only want to do that at 1:40am or later so no big loss. Your Horse will "magically" reappear in it's stall the following morning. He wandered home! What a smart hoss you got there!

The only noticeable drawback for the Horse is it has a big butt. But(t)... only vertically! When riding left and right it can pass a through single tile space, but when riding up and down it needs 2 open tiles to pass. This puts design constraints on your Farm layout to accomodate the Horse's particular shape but it becomes second nature after some time. However you do need to keep in mind that there are a lot of single tile width spaces on the rest of the Town map which block the Horse from passing.

You will learn them, it is a rite of passage.

I take forever to get the horse since I find the running a bit more of a luxury than anything, but the speed boost really is worth it when you do end up getting a horse. You get used to hopping off to get forage and etc. and it can definitely help your routine

At some point you can also get an item that lets you call the horse to wherever you are, which makes it even better. I'd definitely get a horse. You can put a hat on it too. That alone is worth it.

Should also be said that I think time stops when you jump on/off the horse, similar to when you pick up vegetables and such, so you don't really lose any time doing that in between foraging and such. Not much anyway.

I usually get the horse around the time I finish the community center or around winter year 1/spring year 2, which ever comes later. I love the horse and do recommend getting it earlier than I do because it saves a lot of time. I get impatient running around without the horse. That being said; Whenever I am on the horse, I am happy. Anything speedy is a must have for me. Naming the horse and giving it a fab hat is definitely the best part. Whether you always leave the horse on your farm as a mascot or if you take it with you wherever you go, every farm needs a horse :!::!::!::!::!::!:

Hoss always loves you! no feeding or petting. They just love you even when you leave them at the bus stop, or forget where you parked them. Hoss is probably the bestest friend you can get in the game. He can go almost anywhere you can.

I like the horse. I sometimes forget I have it and start grumbling about how long it takes me to get places... then I remember and whistle it up.

I found foraging by "off the horse, grab forage, back on the horse" isn't appreciably slower then foraging from on foot, and as someone noted, getting to the forage is easier.

And in Cindersap, it encourages clearing out the extra wood and stone and weeds...

oh and even when you slingshot eggs at them too see if you can......
Hee hee! If anyone is playing multiplayer, in the player chat section you do receive your Horse's opinion of this action, which never ceases to make me laugh!

Edit: incorrect, instead the game merely lets everyone know that a social transgression has happened, which does a great job of standing in for the Horse's annoyance.

At some point you can also get the horse flute so if you use the minecarts around you can also have your horse appear at your location. Sadly it takes a place in your inventory, so if you like to travel light it might be a bit of a hassle.

Personally I don't find the horse super worth it until I get the horse flute which lets you call the horse to where you are, because the horse won't come with you if you take the minecarts, use the totems/obelisks, or take the bus to the desert or the boat to the island. So at that point I'm not really using it unless I'm just riding around Cindersap Forest, or maybe going around town if I go in by the bus stop entrance. I know I'm in the minority in that, though.
