PC [HELP] Fishing issue - can't get to minigame?

Hi, so my friend's been having an issue with his game where he can't reel in to get to the fishing mini-game. He doesn't even catch anything else, like trash or seaweed.

His process goes as follows:
1. throw out line
2. get !
3. click once
4. reels in with nothing

He also says that "Basically in two days of fishing I'm currently lucky if three goes at the minigame"

I've been trying to work out if it's an issue with his ability to click in time but he's never had issues with things like that in the past. He's determined to get better at fishing but it's just frustrating that he can't even get to the mini-game part.

Maybe he is faster if he uses c instead of clicking?

I also react faster to the audiocue than the exclamation mark, if he plays without sound it might be worth a try.

He's tried using C before unfortunately, that was one of the first things he looked into :(

For a long time I had an issue too. As @Ereo suggested, though, I turned up the volume and started listening for the audio cue. I think he's just coming in a bit late, because that exclamation mark doesn't give you long to click.
