Looking for a better way to find some things

I'm on fall of year two and it's hard for me to get some materials such as gold.

What are good things to sell in order to gain a lot of money?

Does anybody know how to get mushrooms besides waiting for them to pop up on your farm?

Also, does anybody know where I can get hardwood besides from the stumps on my farm?

To get money, many people sell pale ale or ancient fruit wine. You can build kegs at farming level 8. Hops make pale ale, wheat makes beer, fruit makes wine- all reasonably profitable. Truffles are also profitable but a large upfront cost. Pigs are expensive. Even a full coop and barn together can easily make you 5,000g a day - which is not nearly as much as wine, but is a good place to start.

Mushroom trees pop up if you have untapped trees. Once you have one let it spread sprouts and soon you’ll have plenty of trees to tap for mushrooms. The lava levels of the mine have red and purple mushrooms and the secret woods have plenty of other mushrooms, depending the season. The secret woods also is your source for hardwood.

I hope this helps!

I'll try and answer your questions in order!

1. The easiest way to get gold is either buy mining it on levels 80+ in the mines or Skull Cavern on levels 60+ (Rare) or 80+ (Common). You can also buy it from Clint for 400:g: in Year 1 or 750:g: in Year 2+
2. Early game I found that selling stuff from the mines and bulk crops like blueberries, cranberries, strawberries worked best. In the late game, its all about wine making and iridium truffles using the botanist perk. If you're into min/maxing you can use this website which can calculate the crop profits
3. You can pick up most mushrooms with the exception of morel and purple mushrooms in the fall. The best way to get them is from the mushroom cave afterDemetrius visits you for gaining 25,000:g:. Red and Purple mushrooms can be found in the Mines while Chanterelle and Morel mushrooms can be found in the Secret Woods
4. Right now the only way to get hardwood is by the stumps on the farm or in the secret woods, finding it in the barrels in the mines, or from the fish ponds by getting the Woodskip fish to a population of 6 (I haven't tried this but it is in the wiki). CA has confirmed that in 1.15 there will be another way to get hardwood via this tweet

Hope this helped!

Thank you, Boo1972! I think I'm at Farming level 4 or 5 right now, so I still haven't gotten to the keg. I'll keep that in mind, though. By the "lava levels" do you mean the cave levels 80 and further? Just wondering

Thank you too _Fishy_! I currently am not able to make wine, but I'll keep that in mind!
I also might go deeper than skill level 0 into fishing now.

The Preserves Jar is available earlier in the game at Farming Level 4, and they are useful for increasing the sell price of any fruit or veggie you can stick in there. They are sort of the early game Keg.

To get Gold Ore, you need to head deeper into the Mines. You'll also get incidental minerals and other things which are useful to sell or use as gifts so Mining is always a good thing. At least get the 24 slot Large Pack from Pierre if you don't already have it, it really comes in handy in the Mines.

While Fishing is a great way to get early game money, it is usually frustrating to learn. I hated Fishing my first playthrough but love it now that I've figured it out. The Large Pack also helps a lot here, too.

Upgrade your Axe again and chop everything you see out on the map, and you'll find another place to get more hardwood...

Moderate money makers:

Mayo machines: Build one for every egg-laying animal you have (chickens, ducks). You can keep them in the coop to save space :)
Large chicken eggs make better quality mayo (more $), duck mayo is worth more than regular but the ducks don't lay eggs every day.

Cheese press: Similar to the mayo machine, except with cows and goats.

*If you have a deluxe barn, pigs can make you a lot of money. But unlike the other animals, they don't produce anything in the winter. Since you're in fall right now, if you don't have a deluxe barn or pigs yet, I wouldn't invest in them until spring.

Preserve jars: Build more than you think you need. If you have expensive fruits (especially ancient fruit), save those for kegs. If you have a lot of cranberries left over this season, you can make jelly throughout winter and have a steady income :) More expensive vegetables (pumpkin, amaranth, etc) are good for pickling.
*If you have a fish pond, you can process the roe in preserve jars too.

Fishing: Good for rainy days if you want a break from mining. I like to go to the beach, buy some trout soup from Willy, fish on the pier, and then sell him everything I caught.

EDIT: Since you are level 0 fishing, buy the training rod from Willy. It's easier to use! The trout soup temporarily increases your fishing level, which makes it easier to catch some fish. If you want to practice, the mountain lake (by the mines) is a good spot :)

You can also get Hardwood with the lvl 10 Foraging skill if you choose the tree route, 20% chance to get Hardwood off of trees. Either plant a bunch of trees in your farm or go around town and chop all the trees. With the talent, you can gain way more than you can farming Secret Woods which only nets 12 per day. (Immersive Farm adds another 12 or 14 if you use this mod).

I just want to add that pigs take 10 days to grow up, so am investment in pigs in winter means you have grown pigs looking for truffles in spring.

Bonus: if you pet them every day in winter, they'll love you in spring and produce even more truffles.

Make sure you stop at level 5 fishing though or it can seriously hinder you when you need better fish for quests or the community center.

First, you gotta go deep into the mines if you want gold ore/bars. 80 -120 is the range you're looking for. Once you get down that deep, you can use the elevator to get back reliably.

Second, an essay titled: How I Make Steady Amounts Of Money:
imnvs said:
The only vegetables I make into juice are the most expensive, so we're talking pumpkins, cauliflower and red cabbage. Everything else gets pickled, and this includes amaranth, yams and artichokes.

The only fruit I make into wine are the most expensive, anything as expensive or more than pomegranates (so in order from least expensive to most: pomegranate & peach, crystal fruit, rhubarb, melons, ancient fruit, starfruit). Everything else gets made into jams.

Additionally, almost 1/2 of my plants each growing season are the berries for that season (Strawberries, Blueberries, Cranberries) for my preserves jars. Another almost half are cauliflower, melons or pumpkins for my kegs.

I typically have just as many kegs as I have preserves jars.

This is all, of course, predicated on me getting the greenhouse too. In there I have...
- 1 iridium sprinkler's worth of space (24) for 5 strawberries, 5 blueberries, 5 cranberries, 4 hops, 5 coffee to provide a steady small stream of these.
- 1 iridium sprinkler's worth of space (24) for rare seeds, starfruit, and rhubarb or beats out of season.
- 4 iridium sprinklers to cover the rest, which is 68 spaces, all for ancient fruit plants.

When I get a cellar and casks, I fill it full of casks (125 is the most you can get while still having access to them all) and then the only things that ever get aged are, from best value to least when comparing price increase over time: Starfruit Wine, Ancient Fruit Wine, Goat Cheese, Cheese. Everything else gets sold without aging. Most of the time I even skip on aging the cheeses, because between getting 68 ancient fruit per week and getting the odd batch of starfruit, all of which is made into wine, I produce more of these wines than I can age in my cellar. I only age cheese when I first get the cellar, before my greenhouse is at full production.
Now, about mushrooms... that all depends on the kind of mushrooms you're looking to get. First, though, there comes a time when Demetrius comes by and asks you what to do with the cave on your farm. If you want mushrooms, go for the mushroom cave. Now, the mushroom cave is nice for helping you complete a bundle or so, and for helping you get the mushrooms you need for making Life Elixers... and while I like it, I'm starting to come around for the fruit bats. They help you complete multiple bundles, and harder ones to complete than what the mushroom cave helps you with. In that case, I suggest you not worry about mushrooms. The only ones you need are the ones needed for cooking (except that you must craft at least 1 Life Elixer of you want the Master Craftsman achievement) and that's common mushrooms and morels only. Morels are found in the Secret Woods and on the Forest Farm in the Spring. If you really want mushrooms, make sure you cultivate a mushroom tree grove by having a lot of trees on your farm in the fall, because how you get the mushroom trees is from an adult wild tree turning into one, and there's a small chance for each tree on each day during the Fall.

Finally, unless you're playing 4 Corners or Forest Farm maps, the stumps and logs on your farm do NOT respawn. Once you chop them up, that's it. When your axe is good enough to take out the logs, though, you can unlock the Secret Forest which has 8 stumps that respawn every day (in the Cindersap, NW corner, blocked by a log when the game starts). Stop by there somewhat regularly and you'll eventually have a nice stock of hardwood.

I've actually done all of these things besides improving on farming and fishing.
I'm at Farming level 3 and I'm terrible at fishing, so I'll work on that.

Good essay, imnvs!
I figured out the gold levels quickly, although my health levels decrease quickly.

When Demetrius came by, I chose the fruit option, which has helped but the mushrooms seem to be a good option as well now.

I do have the forest farm, which is great for hardwood! It's just that I'd like to get a little more per day although my current gain is enough.

Yes, level 80 and below. If you don’t have kegs, preserve jars can be an easy way to make money. The early game can be pretty frustrating as far as money goes- you’re constantly spending every little bit you have to improve the farm, to make more money, to buy upgrades to your farm In an endless cycle. Then, one day, usually in fall, it switches. Before you know it, you’ll have millions.

So, I’m editing this post for another piece of advice. I would try to push up your farming level. Fall crops are great for that, but I am one of the few people who farms a lot in winter too. You can make a lot of winter seeds to either sell or grow and I find winter crops beautiful on the farm. How many winter seeds you ask? I have 476 saved up to plant for my first crop this coming winter.

Thank you, everybody!
I'm in year 3 now and have unlocked Calico Desert and am married. I am focusing more on farming and I'll soon be working on fishing!
Thank you again for your advice!

Edit: I also reached the bottom of the mines and got a small coop with a chicken.

If you are having issues with the mines, Pumpkin Soup (Recipe from Robin at 7+ hearts) increases both defense and luck.
