Have you ever smelted yourself some refined quartz in a furnace?

Okay, I know you can put quartz and fire quartz both into the furnace to get refined quartz... but my question is, really? Who has ever done this? I get just SO much refined quartz from recycling that I've never needed to (as I see it) waste coal on this process. Has anyone? I'm curious. If you have reasons it was necessary in your save, I'd be interested to hear those reasons too. Please, share.

I do a lot. I generally don't make recycling machines until late game (I'm not very efficient, lol) so I just use the furnace to make refined quartz. I generally use regular sprinklers, not iridium sprinklers, until like Year 3+. And in late game I can afford to buy more coal and already have a bunch of coal stocked up, so I don't really see it as a waste, because coal is basically only good for smelting.

If you want a large number of quality sprinklers in year 1 it's absolutely necessary.
Really? Because I might posit that this completely depends on how much fishing you do year 1.
Yes, but just once to get a sprinkler. By the time I next needed one, I figured out that those old Joja CDs were useful for more than just drink coasters and frisbees.
See, Lew gets me. Why bother spending coal when those JojaOL can be made into all the refined quartz you need? (Such a silly internet platform.)

i often do because i typically don't make many recycling machines and litter is infrequent enough that i see no issue in smelting quartz myself

also i feel like i'm the only person who has ever played stardew valley and never runs out of coal, i just don't use it as much as others do, but i am not a super efficient player. there's like a point in my game where i just have so many bars or i prefer using ore for something else.... maybe i can start selling bars or something...

If your playing for max money fishing is a waste of time past spring day 4

Only in early game. I have a system now of crab pots, worm bins and recycling machines, so I have a lot of built up refined quartz.

So, I didn’t even realize you could make refined quartz in my first farm for a really long time. I also didn’t make a lot of quality sprinklers (I should have checked my crafting list a little closer) so I had plenty of refined quartz just from trash and mobster drops. But since then I have made refined quartz. Sometimes I don’t have a lot of trash. I like fishing but I prefer to farm, so I don’t really have much trash available. I should probably put crab pots on my farm just for recyclables, because I never remember to check them on the beach. It’s too far away. My current farm has been trickier. Coal has been harder to come by then on my previous saves, but I decided to go all in on quality sprinklers year 1. And I have a lot fewer preserve jars. It’s been worth it because of the style of play for this farm (stress relief after and sometimes during remote learning). I wouldn’t do it again though. I’d fish more- or slaughter more monsters.

Not a big fan of the fishing game, so yea... I've done my share of baking quartz in mid-spring.

Having said that, the Recycling Machine is only Fishing4, so it isn't too deep to dive for, and as a trick for getting more stuff to recycle, fish on the farm (assuming you aren't on a River Farm), and it is guaranteed to net you 'trash'. Of the six possible items to fish up, two of them are guaranteed to produce Refined Quartz when recycled, meaning you have a one in three chance of getting something you can recycle into refined quartz. It won't take you long to get enough Broken CD's and Broken Glasses to make quite a few Quality Sprinklers.

True, but fishing the farm pond for trash is just a complete waste of a day, because you don't generate anything else of value, and at only 3 XP per catch, it won't make a meaningful dent in your progression to the next level on your Fishing skill either. Even if you only want enough quality sprinklers to fit around one scarecrow, which is about 22 of them while still keeping every plot protected from crows, you'll take a long time to collect that many Joja CDs and Broken Glasses with normal fishing outside the farm.

Honestly OP, I think you're better off mining for the quartz, and smelting it, because you'll be making progress down the mines, and picking up useful and valuable items along the way. You'll quickly be swimming in quartz from the mines anyway, meaning it's not even worth the inventory space to hang on to the CDs and Glasses from fishing. And if you run low on coal, honestly, just buy it from Clint; it's only 150g each, and the activity you fit into the time saved will earn you more money than that

It takes me very little time to harvest quite a number of crab pots. And I find it just about impossible to finish the CC without fishing, so getting to the point where I have crab pots is pretty much assured.

Getting trash to recycle is super easy and can take very little time.

The problem is that crab pots are very expensive to craft or to buy. They take quite a while to make their money back and you have to bait and collect them every day. But it does sound like an interesting way to play. They're also a much more efficient way to level your fishing xp. As far as the cc you pretty much have to fish some but you don't need to fish so much that you're swimming in trash.

Well, to be fair, I only made 1 crab pot and harvested it daily until I completed the crab pot bundle. That got me 3 more. Then I waited until I got to Fishing 5 and went Trapper before making more pots.

I've always smelted my quartz to make refined quartz :o. I never build recycling machines and in my 2nd playthrough the free recycling machine from the community center didn't work for some reason? So I just never bothered with them again lol. I just find going to the mines and farming those little coal monster fairies to get more coal enjoyable too.

I love hacking through those adorable little coal monsters too. I only feel a little guilty about dispatching so many of them.

Good way to get your first coffee bean too, those dust sprites. Those suckers piss me off with how fast they bounce around (appropriate that you can get coffee from these hyper idiots), so I don't feel the least bit of guilt dispatching them by the load.

This is just about exactly how my games go now, even my MP buddy did the same before I could get to it (how did that happen?). Arranging the Worm Bin(s) and 4 Crab Pots next to each other along a route I pass by every other day or so makes it quick and easy to grab Bait and do the Trash/Bait exchange in only a few seconds. Later on, the non-Trash items can be made into Escargot and Maki Rolls for more Fishing or Mine diving.

Those guys are my Coal source mid-game when I need to hit the Mines for a bit more Iron, which I seem perpetually out of. The only guilt I feel is for my poor muscles which have to do the bit with the hacking. That's where the Maki Roll comes in handy...
