This is just about exactly how my games go now, even my MP buddy did the same before I could get to it (how did that happen?). Arranging the Worm Bin(s) and 4 Crab Pots next to each other along a route I pass by every other day or so makes it quick and easy to grab Bait and do the Trash/Bait exchange in only a few seconds. Later on, the non-Trash items can be made into Escargot and Maki Rolls for more Fishing or Mine diving.
My MP buddy is the wife, and in those games I don't do ANY fishing until I get crab pots. She fishes until she can make my first crab pot for me.

Okay, I know you can put quartz and fire quartz both into the furnace to get refined quartz... but my question is, really? Who has ever done this? I get just SO much refined quartz from recycling that I've never needed to (as I see it) waste coal on this process. Has anyone? I'm curious. If you have reasons it was necessary in your save, I'd be interested to hear those reasons too. Please, share.
I have yes. Why? Because crystal flooring, lightning rods, and other odds and ends. But mostly for the flooring recipes.

I have never used recycling to obtain refined quarts. Furnace always felt like easier way as I am not into using crab pots and fishing as much!

I use a mix of the two strategies. If I fished enough in spring year 1 to get all my quartz from recycling, I wouldn't get far enough down the mine to get the ore I need for my sprinklers... On my current playthrough I haven't used much quartz since summer year 1, but I have kept recycling my trash from crab pots so I now have a big stack of the stuff as well as a large amount of raw quartz crystals. Those do at least make good gifts for a number of villagers!

On my first playthrough I think I didn't use sprinklers until my 2nd year, so I wasn't in dire need for refined quartz, which is great because I didn't know about smelting quartz/fire quartz until after my second playthrough. And since I chose the riverland farm I fished quite a lot, once I figured out I could recycle the trash I started collecting them instead. Before I knew it I have a whole slew of refined quartz than I know what to do with, so I never really needed to use the furnace to smelt.

Ever since then, I definitely prefer to use the recycling machine than the furnace, it also gives me a nice feeling to turn trash into treasure rather than using up quartzes and coals that I could use for something else.
