Writing Their First Flight Together

I kinda went so far ahead in my love of my farmer and abigail so I wrote this short story of them. Hope you enjoy! <3

As morning rose, a crisp clear day casts a picturesque light across the valley.

Across the golden soil of Dustfield, a long barren road of gravel and worn dirt stretched along the turf, baked by the Sun.

Parked on end was Blue Betty, Robbie's pride and joy, a blue and white biplane with two open-air cockpits that exposed the crew to the elements with only a miniscule windscreen to offer if barely a shield from the wind. Robbie stood by the side, performing checks for the flight ahead.

Abigail was up bright and early, excitement coursing through her veins. She had been up well before the sun, eager to begin the day with Robbie. As she approached Dustfield, she could see him in the distance, standing beside Blue Betty. Her heart skipped a beat at the sight. She made her way over to him, feeling a rush of anticipation at the thought of going up in the biplane with the pilot.

"Morning, handsome."

The pilot glanced and noticed her arrival and welcomed her with that same comforting smile.

"Morning, dear. Did you sleep, alright?" He asked her.

Abigail smiled back at him, feeling her cheeks flush at the sight of his smile.

"I did, thanks. Couldn’t stop thinking about our flight, though."

She walked closer to him, her eyes fixed on the biplane.

"She looks beautiful this morning. You ready?"

He sighs as he gazes around his plane, feeling the wings and the giant propellor up front.

"She's sure is. Can't beat a plane that ye built herself. Haha!" He chuckled. "I'm ready, I suppose ya bought your goggles since they're around your neck."

Abigail nodded, reaching up to touch the pair of brown leather goggles resting atop her chest.

"Wouldn't dream of flying without them."

She stepped closer to the biplane, her eyes roaming over the polished exterior.

"It's amazing that you built this yourself, Robbie. It's incredible.

"Customary for every descendent of the McSopwith family to build their own plane as part of their training to become a pilot. I'm glad I did." He sighed before looking to Abigail.

"Right, let's get going." He huffed, climbing up into the seat behind Abi's. "I dunno if ye wanna wear a leather cap, like I do, hence I left it under yer seat. Yer choice." He informed.

Abigail nodded and looked under her seat, noticing the leather cap.

"Thanks. I think I'll just stick with my goggles. I like feeling the wind in my hair."

She put on the brown leather goggles and smiled up at Robbie, her dark blue eyes shining with anticipation.

"Ready when you are."

Robbie nods and begins checking the instruments and performs the necessary startup sequence.

"Clear prop!" He calls out.

The silent air was then disturbed as Blue Betty's engine spluttered into life, causing a great draught to blow through their faces, kicking up dust by the wheels as Robbie reached over to grab his harness to strap in; Promptly, the leather straps wrapped over his shoulders before clipping into the buckle that was fastened over his waist.

Abigail strapped herself in as well, settling into her seat and feeling the familiar feeling of excitement that came with flying.

She watched Robbie's hands move confidently over the controls, expertly preparing the plane for takeoff. As the engine roared to life, Abigail's heart skipped a beat.

"Here we go." She said, her voice barely louder than the engine.

Robbie gazed upon the sides of the aircraft before securing the goggles over his eyes, he nods Abigail's acknowledgement and begins the short trip to the sky; With the engine's tone beckoning, and the wind whipping past their faces, the plane gradually moved forwards; Gradually rolling down the taxiway towards the runway.

Abigail felt her stomach flutter as the plane picked up speed, the ground beneath them becoming a blur.

She took a deep breath and steadied herself, gripping the edge of her seat tightly as the plane prepared to lift off into the air. She looked over at Robbie, taking in his confident expression and feeling a rush of excitement as the plane reached the end of the runway.

"Here we go..." she said again, her voice barely audible over the sound of the engine.

The plane finally lines up with the runway, everything calmed in the moment as Robbie checks over one last time. He does up his helmet and then pushes the throttle all the way.

A firm force pushed the two into their seats as Blue Betty drastically accelerated, sprinting down the runway; The ground caused them to rock and tremble as the plane rumbled along the rough gravel until it all subsided and were finally flying.

As the plane lifted off the ground, Abigail felt an overwhelming sense of freedom wash over her. The world below seemed to shrink as they gained altitude, the familiar farmland of Pelican Town growing smaller and smaller as they soared higher into the air.

She took a deep breath, the rush of adrenaline coursing through her veins.

"It's incredible, Robbie..." she said, her voice a mixture of excitement and wonder.

The two climbed higher and higher, the land below shrinking in their wake while the air became ever more frigid as they went.

"It is definitely incredible, babes. Always has." He said, his white scarf flapping in the wind.

As they reached cruising altitude, Abigail took a moment to take in the breathtaking view.

The fields below them looked like a giant patchwork quilt of green, with the tiny houses and buildings of Pelican Town nestled amidst the foliage. To the east, she could just make out the shimmering waters of the ocean.

"I could stay up here forever..." she said, her voice filled with awe.

Abigail was in her element, the quietness of the sky around her, whilst hearing the quiet growl of the engine, all while the spans of the surface lazily passed beneath them.

As the wind flailed with her purple hair, it all felt like the two had left their problems behind, embracing what felt like true freedom.

"I feel the same way." Robbie spoke up as he brought the plane to a gentle cruise. "One day, I could just spend an entire year just travelling the world by air, exploring the sights and seeing it all from above. I feel so glad to have finally been given the chance of getting my dream of being a pilot."

Abigail nodded, feeling a sense of peace wash over her as they cruised through the sky.

The thought of spending a year flying around the world with Robbie sounded like a dream come true. She could imagine the endless adventures they could have, seeing new places and experiencing new cultures together.

"I wouldn't mind spending a year like that either. But only if I can have you there with me."

"I wish it were that easy, honey." Robbie spoke as he brought the plane into a lazy circle over a part of the outer region of the country. "It takes a lot of preparation, a dedicated plane and many more just to remain in the air for that long... and I am just a farmer who dusts the fields and then sells the produce. It's for a living." He affirmed.

Abigail nodded, understanding the reality of the situation. She knew that Robbie had responsibilities back on the farm, and that his dream of a year-long flying adventure might not be feasible.

"I know, but a girl can dream, right?" she said with a small smile.

She took in the view from their perch in the sky, admiring the stunning landscape below them.

"And I am so grateful that you've given flying a chance, despite your original intents on exploring the mines."

Abigail shrugged, a small smile on her face.

"I have to admit, I never thought I would be up here, flying over the farm. But... there's something special about being up here with you. It feels like we're untouchable, like nothing can touch us."

She glanced out at the scenery below, taking in the patchwork of farmland and the little buildings of Pelican Town.

"Thank you for taking me up here, Robbie. It's... incredible."

"I appreciate it, babes."

Robbie looked to the side to watch the world go by below.

"I've always loved being up here too..." He laments, a tone in his voice showing signs of loneliness. "Being up here, where people won't see us or reach us... but I always felt like I was lonely. No one else was brave enough to take the chance to fly. It's such a privilege that people simply don't understand." He adds.

Abigail's heart felt a pang of sadness at Robbie's words. She could hear the loneliness in his voice, and she wanted to reach out and comfort him.

"Robbie..." she said softly, her voice full of empathy. "I understand. I may not know exactly what it's like to fly, but I know what it's like to feel lonely."

She reached out to take his hand, giving it a squeeze.

"But you're not alone anymore, okay? You've got me now."

He reached out a free hand, and they held their hands outside of their respective cockpits. He looks at her with a renewed smile, the sadness fading away quickly.

"I know... you're the only one who's brave enough to do it. Not to mention that you're simply the most beautiful woman, I could ever have the honour of being my love." He said, a warming swelling feeling in his heart.

"Now, we can both ride the clouds together, like two love birds high in the sky."

Abigail felt a wave of warmth wash over her as Robbie spoke, her heart swelling with affection for him. She smiled and squeezed his hand, enjoying the feeling of their connection up here in the sky.

"I like the sound of that," she said softly. "Two love birds flying high in the sky, together forever."

Then, she leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes, feeling the sun warm her face as they cruised through the air.

The two let go of their hands as Abigail went back to basking in the sun, in her seat, letting the sun land on her face as Robbie concentrated on flying.

"Thanks for coming up with me today. It makes my day that you come out of your way just to be with me." He spoke.

Abigail opened her eyes and turned to look at Robbie, her heart full of affection for him.

"Of course," she said softly. "There's nowhere else I'd rather be. Being up here with you... it just feels right."

She smiled and watched him fly, admiring his concentration and the way his hands moved effortlessly over the controls.

Robbie was a natural ace, he was managing the plane fine and was responding to the radio. They flew through the air for a few hours, enjoying the time they had together.

"Well, I guess we should head back, I really enjoyed the time we had together." Robbie spoke at last.

Abigail nodded, reluctantly agreeing that it was time to head back.

"I did too..." she said, her voice tinged with a hint of sadness that their time up here was coming to an end. "But..." she said, a hint of mischief in her voice. "Maybe we can take one more pass around Pelican Town before we land?"

"Of course, we can do a wee circle round the town." Robbie spoke as he began flying them back. The engine responded to his controls as they lurched about in their seats.

Then the plane began to descend, falling back towards the ground as they dipped beneath the clouds until the ground was visible and were flying only a good few feet above. Abigail held on tight as they descended, her heart pounding with excitement as they flew low over the familiar landscape. It felt like they were skimming right over the ground. She could see the homes and buildings of Pelican Town below, the people going about their daily lives, seemingly unaware of the aircraft flying just overhead.

The streets below were more visible and detailed. The villagers visible and going about their day. Harvey could be seen from the park, apparently having noticed the plane going by and was waving at them.

Robbie waved back at the doctor.

Abigail smiled as she saw Harvey waving at them from below, and she waved back.

"Looks like we've got an audience down there," she said, her voice tinged with amusement.

She turned to Robbie, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"This is incredible, Robbie. I can't believe we're actually flying this low over the town."

"Yea, Harvey's always been in awe of me. Despite not being able to become a pilot." He affirmed as he kept the plane safely above the town. "You can always trust me babes. It's something that I am trained to do." He adds, in a confident tone.

Abigail smiled, feeling completely confident in Robbie's abilities. She knew that he was a skilled pilot and that he would keep them safe.

"I do trust you, Robbie. Completely."

She looked out over the town below, taking in the way the buildings and trees looked miniature from up here.

"I never realized how different everything looks from up here. It's... beautiful."

That's the merit of the sky, you get to see things from a different angle completely. A whole new view on life than on ground level. It's something that feels surreal yet exciting." He explained.

Abigail nodded, her eyes scanning over the landscape below them.

"I can see that," she said, her voice filled with awe. "It's like... a whole new perspective on the world."

She glanced over at Robbie, her heart skipping a beat as she looked at him.

"And I'm glad I get to see it with you."

"And I am grateful to let me share it with you." He spoke with a smile, his scarf snaking behind his neck. "You're more than welcome to come up with me anytime. I am always happy to share this experience with you."

She felt her heart swell at Robbie's words. She loved flying with him, being up here in the sky together.

"Thank you," she said softly. "I'd love to come up with you again soon. I can't imagine ever getting bored of this."

She watched him fly, admiring the way he expertly navigated the aircraft through the air. Robbie carefully guides Blue Betty back to the farm, their trip nearly at an end. While it may seem short-lived, Robbie promised that he could take her up again as her heart desires. For all he wished was to share his love for the sky.

"Here we go, time for touchdown." He spoke as they lined up for the long dirt strip.

Abigail watched as they neared the farm, her heart sinking slightly as she realized their time in the sky was coming to an end.

"Do we have to land already?" she asked, playfully pouting at Robbie.

She could see the dirt strip they would land on ahead of them, the ground coming up quickly.

"I got things to do other than fly sadly, babes. I am a farmer after all." Robbie answered as the two felt the bump from the plane successfully landing back at the farm.

A great force lurched them forwards as Robbie firmly brakes, causing them to slow down drastically once they reached the other end of the runway.

Abigail held on tight as they landed, the jolt of the plane coming to a stop a stark reminder that they were back on solid ground.

"I know, I know..." she said, her voice tinged with disappointment as the reality of the situation set in. "But I just wish we could stay up in the sky forever."

She unstrapped herself from her seat and climbed out of the cockpit with a heavy sigh.

Once the plane made an abrupt halt, the engine died down and fell silent. The pilot unfastened himself, raised his goggles and loosened his signature helmet, before clambering out of the seat and joining with Abigail beside the plane.

He held her hands warmly and a sigh came out of his breath.

"I wish the same but, likewise, there's always next time." He wisely spoke.

Abigail smiled softly, feeling comforted by Robbie's touch.

"I know," she said, her voice soft and tinged with a hint of sadness. "I just... I really enjoyed being up there with you. It felt like... like we were in our own little world, just the two of us."

She looked into his eyes, her gaze filled with admiration.

"But you're right... there's always next time."

"I enjoyed it while it lasted though. We really are meant for each other. Suffice to say, I am happy to do it all over again." He assured and gently pulled her goggles off her eyes and down to dangle around her neck.

Abigail felt her heart swell with affection for Robbie as he pulled off her goggles. She found his touch to be warm and comforting.

"I'm happy too," she said softly. "And I hope we can do it over and over again."

She stepped closer to him, her eyes locked on his.

"You know... I really loved being up there with you. It just feels so... intimate."

He felt the closeness and warmth from her as she neared and smiled. He takes both hands and rests them on his cheeks whilst doing the same to her.

"Our love is really as high as the clouds so they say." He spoke in an affectionate tone.

Abigail smiled at Robbie's words, feeling her heart skip a beat as he rested his hands on her cheeks.

"Yes, it is..." she agreed softly. "Our love is limitless, just like the sky above us."

She stood on her tiptoes and reached up to brush her lips against his in a gentle kiss.

The two cupped their mouths together and embraced a loving smooch before Blue Betty as the mid-day settled across the valley. A warm breeze wafts through the farm as the pair continued to kiss. Only then to part momentarily.

"I love you, Abigail." He spoke with a loving voice.

She felt a wave of affection wash over her as Robbie spoke. She melted into his embrace, feeling completely at peace in this moment with him.

"I love you too, Robbie," she said softly, her voice filled with emotion. "More than anything."

"More than what the skies could ever give us. Together you and me, we will continue to yearn the heavens as we see fit. You and me and no-one else."

Abigail nodded, her heart swelling at Robbie's words.

"Together forever," she said softly. "Just you and me against the world."

She rested her head against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. She knew that as long as she had him, nothing else mattered. The pair continued to embrace each other, letting the stillness preserve the intimate moment together and they’d continue to embrace the sky as they were destined for.
