Lost pickaxe/cannot upgrade

Hi! My pickaxe randomly disappeared from my inventory and turned up in the lost and found. i just upgraded it to iridium quality but when i got it back it was the basic quality, and i dont have the option to upgrade it more through clints shop. how do i fix this?

If I had a guess, I would say you have a multiplayer file and you've found your farmhands's unupgraded pickaxe, while your iridium pickaxe is still hidden in a chest/fridge somewhere

I hope thats the case the same thing happened with my watering can

But you can upgrade your farmhands' tools, if they are the only ones in your inventory.

They don't even have to be the only ones, just the first in order in your inventory (order of each row like how one would read a book)

I'm very curious how they can't upgrade it unless they're somehow not seeing the pickaxe already in their inventory? I've never had issues upgrading multiple sets of tools

But you can upgrade your farmhands' tools, if they are the only ones in your inventory.

IIRC, each player character can't buy the same upgrade twice. So while you can upgrade your farmhands' tools, you can't do it if you've already upgraded your tools

I could be mistaken, but that's what I experienced. Maybe it was because I also held my own tools

It's because you were holding your own tools and they were higher up in your inventory (going left to right). If you put those tools in a chest, or even just rearrange the order you are holding them, you can upgrade the other tools.

When I played multiplayer with my friend, she could only log on very rarely, so when she wasn't on, I would take all her tools from the mayor's lost and found, go to Clint and upgrade them all. She was REALLY amused to get iridium tools with zero effort on her part. My farmer, on the other hand, was tickled pink to provide all the best tools, weapons, and boots for their farmhand.
