Group E:
Curaçao 0 Cote D’Ivoire 2
Ecuador 2 Germany 1

Germany and Cote D’Ivoire both qualify with six points, but Ecuador’s win puts them in the next round as one the top 8 third placed teams. Curaçao’s adventure ends here, thankfully the 7-1 spanking was not repeated.

Time for an overnight catch up while group I plays.

Group F:
Japan 1 Sweden 1
Tunisia 1 Netherlands 3

Poor Tunisia may end up with the worst record amongst all 48 teams with 0 points and -10 GD. With less jeopardy, Sweden and Japan knew what they needed and possibly played a bit within themselves?

Group D:
Paraguay 0 Australia 0
Turkey 3 USA 2

With qualification secured, USA rested most of their players from the first two games and Turkey ended up picking up their first win since 2002. Meanwhile, like in the previous group, Australia and Paraguay played out a draw which suited both parties.

More overnight results

Group I:
Norway 1 France 4
Senegal 5 Iraq 0

Norway rested a lot of players and it showed. Mbappe didn't even score, and France are the second team to go through with 9 points. Senegal's big win over Iraq gives them a solid spot in the 3rd place rankings as the only team so far with a positive goal difference.

Group H:
Uruguay 0 Spain 1
Cabo Verde 0 Saudi Arabia 0

Spain top the group as expected, but none of the other teams registered a single win. Rather improbably, Cabo Verde go through as they didn't lose any of their games either. Neither Uruguay or Saudi Arabia picked up enough points to be in the 3rd place mixer

Group G:
New Zealand 1 Belgium 5
Egypt 1 Iran 1

Belgium get their s*it together in time for the last match, and pip Egypt to the top of the group by GD. Iran will be looking over their shoulder nervously as the final groups play.

Ha, I forgot to post reply...

Group L:
England 2 Panama 0
Croatia 2 Ghana 1

England labour to the top of their group, with Croatia winning their final group game pushing Ghana into the 3rd place mini-league.

Group K:
DR Congo 3 Uzbekistan 1
Colombia 0 Portugal 0

Colombia and Portugal were already though, but Portugal failed to overhaul them to finish top. DRC won their game to clinch third place.

Group J
Jordan 1 Argentina 3
Algeria 3 Austria 3

Argentina completed the clean sweep, Jordan return empty handed from a tough grouo. Algeria thought they had avenged the 'disgrace of Gijon' (google it) with a 93rd minute goal but Austria dramatically equalised deep into time added on. Both teams progress, at the expense of Iran (9th from 8 qualifiers).

Onto the knockouts!

Round of 32:
South Africa 0 Canada 1

Not the best advert for a world cup, Canada advancing after a strike in time added on. For Bafana bafana, the next plane will take them home.

Brazil 2 Japan 1
Brazil left it late, getting their winner in the 96th minute. Japan were game (took the lead) and played well, but one moment sent them home.

Germany 1 Paraguay 1 (3-4 on pens)
Holy moly. After a drab 120 minutes we had our first penalty shootout that Germany had a 100% record in... until now. In sudden death, Germany skied theirs and Paraguay took their chance to progress. Germany's 12 year quest to reach the last 16 continues.

(Sorry @Cuddlebug )

I don't care much about soccer, but thanks anyway 😊 World Cup needs an excellent playing level, nerves like steel and a great portion of luck... If you don't have that... I can just hear the comments, when I say such things 😉

Overnight:
Netherlands 1 Morocco 1 (2-3 on penalties) - The Dutch penalty curse continues, Morocco continue to impress and will be looking to at least equal their 2022 run.

Today:
Cote D'Ivoire 1 Norway 2 - Haaland the difference maker in a tight game between 2 teams who didn't give much away.
France 3 Sweden 0 - Sweden swept aside with apparent ease, Mbappe with another brace to take his total to 6, equal to Messi. It'd be a brave person who bets against them.

Addendum - With his two goals today, Mbappe eclipsed Miroslav Klose's record for goals scored in world cups as he moves to 18. The only person above him is 12 years older, but currently only 1 goal better off: Lionel Messi.

Mexico 2 Ecuador 0 - Mexico keep up their clean sheet record and impressive World Cup record in the Azteca stadium, but it's their first knockout game win in forty years. Most games being home matches helps.

England 2 DR Congo1 - Ooof. DR Congo scored after seven minutes and England couldn't string two passes together. After the drinks break the Congolese keeper was an absolute superman and England couldn't make their domination count. Then 75 minutes in Harry Kane equalised and in the 86th minute got his second, and his fifth of the tournament, putting him equal with Haaland in the top scorer list.

Belgium 3 Senegal 2 - For about the first 80 minutes, Belgium played worse than England had earlier, and Senegal were in a deserved 2 goal lead. Then Lukaku struck back in the 86th minute, followed by Tielemans in the 89th. Onto extra time, and in the 120th minute, Senegal concede a penalty. Tielemans converts to send the Red Devils through, and send Senegal back home. High drama indeed.

USA won comfortably, but losing one of their best players due to a red card will hurt them in their match against Belgium.

True that. And I’d just seen the play-by-play on the Belgium/Senegal game, so I wasn’t taking anything for granted.
