where is everyone putting all their chests!! currently mine are all in front of my house and its kinda messy . i only have about 5 (want to get more though) so its not really that many but i don't wanna keep it all in front of my house. i thought about investing in a shed however it feels a bit like a waste of space for only 5 chests and hard to access. my house is currently only upgraded to a kitchen but if upgrading is my best bet ill do it. (i just wanna keep everything quite tidy) :cat2:

1x big shed for storage, is usually mandatory. The more you progress, the more chests are so going to keep appearing and other than that, you can put other stuff inside the same shed, too!

I have one with 17x big chests and various other rows of machinery
Mine matches this.

I played my first 3 long saves with a double row of Chests outside but it makes a mess of exterior design, even when you hide them behind buildings. But now I put them in a Shed with the most-used machines, which gets upgraded to a Big Shed later if I want more processing. It's clean and easy and gives you something else to decorate!

I scatter several of my chests around the valley. I keep one in the mines top room, and I decorate the bajeezuz out of it, pretty much turning it into a smeltery (that's a word now). Keep another near willy, and a few scattered into barns and sheds and the farmhouse here and there. I know some people will keep chests in people's houses and put a stash of gifts in there for them.

I always keep chests within my house, I'm not a huge decorator but even if you are they can slot in quite nicely as a little section in one part or around the main 'living room' of the house.

In the early game though my chests always fill the area in front of my house and greenhouse (which I pop right next to it), with a couple around the valley like LRangerL has, such as in the entrance to the mines, some fishing spots, and on the island

In the early game I usually have all my chests in the main room of my farmhouse, but once I have the second house upgrade I move my things up into the corner room. Eventually I plan to move them again up into the attic, or some other renovation room.

Where to put all your junk? In my hands. It'll take it-

No, seriously tho.

You can either A. get yourself a shed. For instance, this one is mine, (It's a deluxe shed) It's not pretty. It's essentially my junk drawer in Stardew Valley, all the chests are color-coated for my goofy organization system.

Or you could B. upgrade your house to the "house upgrade 2" package, and unlock house renovations. With that, you can get extra fun rooms, and you could buy one to add onto your house and make it your storage/junk room. You could get the "cubby" and make it your craft room or something.

House Renovations (To the Stardew Wiki-)

I just shove them in chests or if it is food, it gets shoved in one of my 6 fridges (I want to look in my cooking area and see that I can cook every dish) but I spend a lot of time organizing and cleaning out junk that I don’t need, so more chests are not a necessity, and some I don’t even have big chests for.

I sometimes have my chests in an extra room in my house.

But I mostly keep them outside tbh. Some farm layouts are better then others for that purpose. + You can now move your house!

(and yes, I obviously have chests around the valley and on different places of my farm too.) Talking bout the main setup with most of my crops/forage/fish/mining stuff and crafting table)

I do one big shed for organizing. Then I have some more chests at the foot of my beds that I randomly dump stuff in, to later organize into the shed. I can now never imagine not having one of these sheds on my farm.

Lord I simply can not believe that all these chests are needed. I mean I have already achieved perfection and in my farm I basically have only used 6 big chests and a dresser for all the clothing and rings. Sure I played a super relaxed game and if I recall correctly I only reached perfection on year 9 or 10, so maybe that has something to do with it, but all have is a chest for building materials gotten for plant/rock (f.e. rocks, wood, fiber, clay, wild seeds ...), then a chest for all mineral stuff, a chest for some artifacts that I get (never know when one might come in handy for decor or something), a chest for placing decoration materials and surplus paths, a chest for tool that are no longer being used, a chest for miscellaneous stuff (f.e fertilizer, bobbers, some totems and machines). Also have a small chest for seed surplus and that is all I need. Then again different people different needs.

I save so much stuff but even then it depends on the chest. Some of my chests just have a few items, less then one row. Some are half full while others are completely full. So it varies. I would guess I could fit all the stuff I have in that room in less then half the amount of chests pretty easily. I don't "need" all those chests, but I would do it all over again I think lol.

I tend to prefer to have locational chests rather than everything in one place; anywhere from one to five somewhere near the places I will need them. So one by any place I fish a lot, one to three in the cave entries, a few near my planting areas, a bunch inside the house, a couple inside the GI house, a couple beside the workbench, one in the greenhouse...

I tried with a prior farmer to do a chest-limited run (and this was 1.5 so didn't have any big chests). It was HARD, but I've found that even with my "I can just add another!" runs, the practice made me a bit more mindful of not keeping every last thing. This was the criteria:

She cannot keep seeds out of season until she has a place to plant them, like the greenhouse or GI. She cannot save more for the greenhouse or GI than she can store in the chests.
She cannot buy another fridge - or store any food/ingredients in chests overnight once the house has a kitchen. (Getting the quest mini-fridge will really matter...) if he pases out in a mine, she needs to retrieve foodstuffs left behind in chests immediately in the morning.
She can only have three chests to start: one in the house (by the workbench), one in the mine entry, and one on the beach. She can add one each in the following locations as they unlock: Skull Cavern, Greenhouse, Ginger Island Farmhouse, Volcano.

If it doesn't fit in those spaces, it should be sold (or gifted).

If she gets far enough to add Junimo chests, she's also limited to 3, one per mine, and they have to replace the mine chests entirely.

(The last proved to be an "if" as I closed that run without getting Junimo chests.)

I just learned something about chests today. If you have only small chests and you unlock big chest recipes you can make one and put it right on top of the old smaller chest and it will automatically place your items in the big chest and even give the smaller one back! How cool is that?
