The prismatic shard has a few purposes in the game, one quite sinister. Haley knows. Perhaps she made an offering to the shrine of selfishness. Perhaps her parents are traveling the world...as doves.

Turns out that Emily and Haley's parents are greedy moneygrubbers (like the Farmer) and used to do a bit of Mine diving while they were in Pelican Town, discovering the riches contained within before Joja caused the landslide which cut it off. They mined out many of the glittering jewels thus being able to pay for the trip they've been on for a few years (dialog with one of the sisters, IIRC) but unfortunately they've become consumed with that greed and real reason for the trip is to prospect mines in the area, looking for ever more Prismatic Shards after being cut off by the Jojaslide. They sent a note home mentioning they'll be out just a few more years on their search, and then just a few more years than even those, both of which which Haley read, but is keeping from Emily so she won't worry.

I think I understand Haley very much because I hung out a lot of these types of girls. She has the right to express what she dislikes. It's perfectly normal.

It's like you bought an expensive Gucci bag for a girl. Suddenly, she tells you how much she hated the Gucci, and she preferred the Chanel or Dior bag because it does not match her aesthetic.

Haley keeps posting requests on the board for things like Refined Quartz for girl problems. Claiming girls would understand. (Well, I have to admit I am a bad girl and do not understand and keep thinking maybe she'd better talk to Harvey about some evidence-based medicine solutions...)
Anyways, maybe Prismatic Shards work kind of opposite Refined Quartz and Haley takes offence thinking you are proposing to do some mysterious girl-stuff to her?
Also, Harvey does not like cheese. I can understand not liking precious gems. But cheese.
