I was in the mines and randomly got attacked by this thing it runs quite fast, but I’m not sure what it’s called

It's a high-level baddie. I would recommend getting a higher-level weapon from the Adventurers Guild if there's anything available (and affordable-)

They hit for about 18 damage, I think.

A crystal dagger really isn't a good weapon against those things. If you got the insect head reward for killing bugs, you've got a much better weapon there.

You can check the stats of your weapons and compare for yourself. Higher damage values tends to be better. But you also need to take in other factors. A weapon with +speed is better than one with -speed and can make up for a small difference in damage values. +defense can be helpful in keeping you alive, but each point only reduces the damage you take by 1 point. +weight knocks monsters further back and depending on your tactic it can be useful.
If you get a weapon with a star (marking enchantment) and + attack, each point there adds 3 to both values of your damage range.
