CA mentioned there would be added events to the game and many people assumed they would be more IRL-adjacent, like Spirit's Eve and Winter Star. The most logical event people landed on was New Year's so that's what a lot of people ended up expecting. Of course CA had something more creative in store with the Desert Festival, and the smaller events like the Trout Derby, and Squid Fest.
And completely on topic to your initial post, that cow decal was widely assumed to be another animal version or something similar being added to the game and not just a wall art decal. There was a bitta disappointment about that one.
