On Spring 16 of year 3, I woke up to randomly having 4 hearts with Pam when I had absolutely no friendship before. I am 100% certain we had no friendship because I'm doing a friendship focused challenge and have been deliberately keeping some people at no hearts until it's their turn. The previous week or two, I had given her red mushrooms and hit her with the slingshot (along with a bunch of other villagers) because I was trying to reset people back to 0 after finishing the community center.
As of Sunday spring 14, I only had friendship with the villagers I intended to have friendship with. I didn't check on spring 15 because I was busy at the desert festival, so I don't know if the friendship happened at some point on the 15th or if it was given to me overnight.
I did not talk to Pam on the 14th or 15th. I didn't give her a gift, even accidentally - it shows no gifts this week. No stardrop tea either, since the only one I've had in my inventory recently was given to Gus on Sunday. I didn't complete the quest to bring her a pale ale, the quest to bring her a battery, her special order, or any item delivery quest. As mentioned, I had already gotten and depleted the 2 hearts from completing the bulletin board/community center.
And yet when I checked my mail on the 16th, she'd sent me a recipe! And sure enough, when I looked at my relationships tab, there she was with 4 hearts. I tried exiting and reloading the day at that point just to see if anything would change, and it didn't. I'm baffled!
EDIT: Immediately after posting this, I figured it out!! I built her a house. I didn't expect that to grant friendship, let alone so much of it. But of course it does, because who wouldn't like someone who built them a house? And here I was just thinking I was trying to get myself access to shortcuts so I can actually enjoy using them before end game. Oops, sorry Pam, you're really not gonna like your birthday present
