Hello.
My wife and i have started playing Stardew valley, but it gets a little tough for my wife, since she ain't good at english.
I was wondering if it's possible to translate the game to danish, by my self.
Im not a modder or anything. But i've seen it seems like it's possible to edit .json files with the text, but i can't find the standard english ones to translate. I ain't sure if it's even possible to apply .json files to the stardew valley folder for it to instant work?
If you have any idea how i can do this easily, please give me an advice.
Thanks. :)

*EDIT: It's only for the dialogues btw.

The .json files are packed inside the .xnb-files. You need a tool called xnbcli which can extract most of them
https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Modding:Editing_XNB_files gives a link.
I recommend starting with
and searching there.
I have packed the files back (save those that xnbcli cannot handle), but that is not obligatory.
As I said in that other thread, there is a lot of text. Even if you take just the dialogues and maybe event dialogues (BTW those files are horrible: one event is one logical line with dialogue and screen instructions following each other separated by slashes and marked by quotation marks. Skip one or add an extra and you get a mess...)

Your help is much appreciated.
Yea im not surprised it's such a mess. :S But i will give it a shot. Hopefully in the future my wife will send warm hugs. ;)

I'm in the process of translating this way as well. I chose to translate the German files. de-DE.json files.
I've reached a point where i wanted to test if the changes worked. As i didn't want to translate the entire game just to realize i did something wrong.
When launching the game nothing has changed when switching to german language.

Do i need to recompile the files when playtesting the changes ?

You need the content.json file that calls the translated files. You said "nothing has changed". So you got the game in German, you mean?
Another possibility for testing is of course recompiling them and replacing the original files (remember to make a backup first!).
You probably get first a bunch of red (i.e. errors). They usually also seem to make no sense. Look at the address (i.e. that which says line x, char y); probably there is a missing, comma, pairless bracket or the like at that point or a bit before). After umpteen rounds of that you probably get the game running and can rejoice seeing the game in correct language!

Yeah. After i had translated Achievements and Bundles and half of Engagement Dialogue. I thought to my self. Maybe i should test this. lol.
So i edited the stirfry recipe "Dialogue" in the TV show to be able to quickly jump to that part in German setting.
Though the TV still gave Original German Dialogue box.

I'm mainly a bit confused because i was given the impression that just editing the existing files would be fairly simple to boot up and test. As the game would read the (unpacked) if there rather than the xnb compiled files.

(idk, was expecting it to behave sort of like old school games, where you would just edit existing files and they'd change in game. gta Vice City comes to mind. Giving Tommy a nice drip of a spiderman pattern shirt xD) When you say content.json file that calls the translated file. My brain is fried from todays work and just bleeps. I feel like i know what you mean. But i'm not processing it. Tried to look for a content.json file that could potentially call for translated files but realizing i don't know what i'm looking for X'D

Take any translation mod and see how it's done! I presume that when you have the original game xnb files and uncompressed json files, the xnb:s take precedence. Of course just removing the original xnb would do a trick for testing (don't remove it! Move it into another folder!)
