Sonar Bobber

I made one of these just now, thinking it would show the fish before I hooked it, thus saving bait and bobber durability vs. unwanted fish. But it only shows the fish after you've hooked it, at which time, the entire reason for using it is pointless for me. I know what fish is on the line just by its movement. Unless I'm missing something, it seems like this bobber is useful only for new players who haven't memorized fish patterns yet? Am I wrong here?

I've noticed most other bobbers get a better effect if they are doubled up on the advanced iridium rod. I know that's not the case with sonar bobbers right now, but perhaps in a future patch, using two could be made to show the fish before you hook it?

EDIT: Also, I'm aware of targetted bait. But in my example, I was trying to use challenge bait with the sonar bobber. I suppose if the sonar bobber worked in the way I thought it would, it may make it too overpowered. Hmm...

I think it's supposed to be used for players who haven't memorized fish patterns. Plenty of people don't memorize them even in late game. I do think it could use some more functionality but at least it is an improvement over the previous nothing.

I think 90% of players never memorise the patterns.
I also think the fish is only determined one it’s on the hook, not when you throw out your line.

I don’t find them useful enough to make them or to replace the other bobbers, but I do enjoy them when I got them somewhere. Preferably on the mastery rod zugehe with a more useful bobber.

Yeah the sonar bobber is functionally useless, it's only purpose is if you want one fish in particular btu care so much about irl time that you can't play the whatever 8 second minigame and don't care about the loss from that

I wasn't aware that the fish only gets determined when you hook it. That makes a lot more sense than how I thought it worked. The bobber is still useless for me, but I'm glad it's there for other players who may find it useful.
