The slingshot works with pull back and release. You aim by "pulling" in the opposite direction you want to shoot. A little red indicator appears when you pull back, showing the direction you'll shoot. So you pull back, drag your finger to aim, and release to shoot.
I play on ipad and android and I use the slingshot a lot. It's great for monsters that throw or shoot at you, so you can get them while staying out of range. The most damage is iridium ore for ammo, and explosive ammo is great for busting rocks to find the way down quickly.
You can use any ore, coal, rocks, wood, eggs, fruits or veggies for ammo. I recommend practicing a bit, in the early levels of the mine, or in the secret woods. I use salmonberries for practice. You can even slingshot villagers, they do not like it at all! But you can tomato Demitrius if you want.
