Just joined the forums only to come here to say this.
I agree. Fence/Gate decay is a problem, really annoying at least, and doesn't make sense in a lot of ways. This is my first time actually deciding to finish the game start to finish, going into year 4, and it's the only gripe I've run into.
- Metal and stone fences last less than wood.
- It decay's quickly. Building a fence in Spring to have it falling apart by end of summer or start of fall, and just giving up out of frustration, so you let it be destroyed in the winter. Is really disheartening.
- Using furniture, and other structures like signs are indestructible fences, but less aesthetically pleasing. With the exception of a few that is aesthetically pleasing, but expensive to use for an entire farm. Albeit the actual fence designs are not bad, and I would like to use them for my farms aesthetic!
- It's not easy to upkeep. It's really hard. You spend whole day's running back and fourth across your farm to repair different kinds of fences, and miss out on story content, speaking with npcs, shopping, foraging, fishing, exploring mines- the whole game. Just to keep up with making, and placing fences to a backhanded rng program.
- The cost of the clock is too damn high! :toodamnhigh.jpg:
- My husband is useless! Even he can't keep up with fixing the fences! He'll repair one, and then be like "ah good", and walk away from one fixed fence surrounded by destroyed fence, with holes letting all the animals out! I need a new husband!
- Tree's hide fences. If there is a tree inside one of your fenced off area's, or next to the bottom. You could walk by that fence a thousand times, and not even know it's destroyed. Too many nights waking up with a cow in your bed, and I am not talking about Haley.
Rule of cool: "if the Storyteller or players want to do something cool, then you go for it".
Other Suggestions:
- Remove decay from fences/gates, or make it more manageable. Instead of RNG ticks have it on a set timer so players can plan the day's they use for farm upkeep.
- Have fences last even longer, so it's less of a bother longer.
- Make husbands/wives repair fences faster, and better.
- Allow players to repair the fences at anytime, so they can plan weekly, biweekly, or monthly times they will run around the farm and repair all the fences back to full. I read somewhere that you could just click on a fence with it's important resource to repair it. I tried that with Wood and the Wood Fence, but it didn't work. I had to use the wood fence craft, only when the fence was nearly broken. Let players use a wood piece at any point of the fences decay, to restore it back to full, and that will do the whole system a world of good (equivalent for all fences - stone/wall, hardwood/hardwood, etc).
- Make the gold clock more available and cheaper!
Anyways, that's all for now. I am going to go turn all my fences to other things now, which will make me not care anymore, and this reply mute.
