Pigs vs Sheep?

I keep one pig and one sheep just so I have them, but the pig definitely is not a money maker because there is so much grass there is nowhere to dig up truffles.
The pigs can dig up truffles in the grass, but to find them you kinda have to walk all over and find the spots where your path is blocked. Or use a scythe to reveal their location.

I recall being told that although they can appear in grass, the tile the pig stands on to look for a truffle can't have grass or it won't even look for one. So you need a lot of bare ground for a pig to wander around on. Since I see more and more truffles appear as the animals eat away the grass, I am inclined to believe this.

They can't dig up truffles on the grass tiles per se, but they can dig them up in gaps in the grass where they (or another pig) ate grass and left an open spot.

This basically just means pigs are better off being fed hay instead of large grass fields, which really isn't that expensive. A single truffle oil covers a pigs food for a month, so it can reasonably pay off its whole year of eating in a lucky day.

That's good because I NEVER let my animals out to eat grass lmfaoo. My cows eat hay only.

I think I'm gonna get one pig and see if I like it. If I don't I'm gonna sell it and buy sheep.
I have one pig on my current farm because I needed a truffle for one of the CC bundles. I like to have a lot of grass around the barn & coop, so I hardly get any truffles because they only dig them up on clear dirt spots (and the stone entrance of the greenhouse, apparently). Also, since there's so much grass, the truffles are usually hidden so unless I'm on the farm to hear them dug up, I often don't know there's one there until I run into an invisible obstacle. Usually while I'm trying to get out of the grass to kill a monster without cutting it. Overall, I'm not impressed with the pig. Vincent (my current farmer's brother-in-law) seems happy about the "piggy" on the farm, so I'm keeping it. I'm definitely not getting another though.

Irridium quality wool makes two spools of cloth, so I think the sheep & rabbits are more valuable for how I play.

Well you could feed your cows grass....

But yeah, if you're already maxed out on friendship/mood, it's very easy to maintain the max levels and you absolutely don't need to bother feeding the animals grass (or at least, don't need to guarantee they always have it, you could have some grass but then keep up your hay stocks in case they eat through it too quickly).

One benefit of grass though is that you don't need to pet your animals if they eat grass at high friendship levels, which saves a lot of time if you're pre-autopetter

I like petting my cows so that's not really a benefit lol. It's very easy to do.
