The same exact thing happened to me. Octopus are so hard to catch, why would anyone toss them in a bin? I was mystified.

I don't understand how people can buy a fish just to put it in an aquarium, wouldn't it be better to put a fish you caught by yourself into a fish tank? It feels a lot better looking at the fish swimming around in the aquarium and being like "I caught that fish". Idk that's just my opinion-

You can always find some artifacts and use those and the octopus, along with some other things, to make a “proof that aliens exist” museum in a shed.

In terms of your fish "collection" page, do you now have credit for the Octopus? If not, what if you put it in a fish tank and then fish it out of there? That to me seems like it would be the main purpose, to fill out your collection if you can't catch the fish the "normal" way. The Octopus is after all tougher than some of the legendary fish imho.

This might work for a fish pond, but not an aquarium. However, I really don't know.

Yeah I've never really tested either, as I love fishing. I don't know how much it would really matter anyway as it's not like you can get the Legend that way so you'll never have the full collection if you rely on it. Still, it's worth testing, I'll give it a whirl later and find out for sure if it does or does not work.

I'm on summer year 2 and managed to get an octopus frenzy, had to run all the way from my farm to the beach lol.
Even with missteps taking a moment to grab another billboard quest and buying some trapped tackles from Willy, I managed to catch 3 gold and 1 silver octopus, and an understanding of why it would be considered legendary level in terms of difficulty. I'm definitely keeping these in an aquarium with the legends I've caught

Other than that, buying an octopus doesn't gain you much unless you've got a fish pond to pop it in (since, as mentioned, neither this nor fishing it out of your pond later counts as "catching" it for completion/perfection purposes). It's a decent money maker, with the possibility of getting omni geodes instead of roe.
EDIT: I've had it pop up as the delivery request item for the Help Wanted board now and then, so holding on to it Just In Case is another option.

Octopus Ponds are a better source of Iridium than Sea Cucumber Ponds and a better source of Prismatic Shards than Rainbow Trout Ponds, as well. All you have to do is break open the Omni Geodes. You could instead trade for Desert Warp Totems and use a post-Community Center machine The Deconstructor to turn them into Iridium Ore, but that's only a lategame option.
